re-sizing jpeg photos for message boards
for all of us who work on Windows PC machines,
we can use the built in MS "Paint" program to re-size our digital photos before we post them.
this is a here's-how I put together

How to re-size jpeg photo files on a Windows PC
even if you don't have any type of photo editing program
the program "Paint" is built into the WINDOWS OS operating system.
A full sized jpeg file from my digital camera is 3776 x 2520 pixels.
I need to reduce the size of these files to post them on a message board
or to upload to a photo album / slide-show account like Flickr or Picasa
On a Windows PC machine > Open your Paint program (it's in Accessories)
under "File" > Open - a large, original jpeg photo file
If I go to Image > Attributes - it tells me the pixel size of the file I just opened

I need to make a file that is around 600 pixels wide &or no more than 600 pixels tall.
Using a little simple math,
divide 600 pixels by 3776 pixels and we get a fraction = .1588
which means that 600 pixels is around 16% of 3776 pixels
Using 16% we go to Image > Stretch/Skew
and change both Horizontal & Vertical to 16% > OK

when I look at the Attributes of the new file it reduced it to 605 x 404 pixels
which is perfect for message boards, emails, photo slide-show sites
Now re-name (Save As) this new file !!
Do not save the file by the same name where it is stored now
You will destroy your original large pixel file

I recently set my camera to take 640 X 480 pictures for normal everyday forum pictures. No resizing necessary.

Nice post Capt. I use Photoshop (sort of my industry but not as much as yours) as well, but surely there are folks with no editing software. Microsoft Office Picture Manager works OK for quick resizing as well (and is on many computers).

you really should shoot everything in your max/full size file and re-size for posting
you never known when your going to need a bigger file for a print
+1 You never know when you are going to need a 36X48 glossy of your food pron. :D

Good info Capt! I use Photo Filter when I resize (only cause that's what I learned on.
Funny thing is I loaded Photo Filtre (yes that's the correct spelling) on Kimmie's lap top but it came in the French version! ;) Now Kimmie thinks I speak French ! OUI! :D :D :D :D

I use fast simple 2 step re sizer that Microsoft offers thru powertoys. It's free but this version only works in XP...waiting for 7 and 8 to come on board.
After install just right click on any jpg file and click a radio button to resize.

I'm an illustrator guy more then photoshop and love how simple it is. Yes I know XP is not the big dog on the street but I only run CS4 and it works fine.

Between food , family and bird photos I take 2 to 3000 photos a year. Photoshop Elements is the best program out there as far as I am concerned for cataloging and working on my photos. The editor has a batch process feature where I can resize a bunch of photos in one setup. I have done 20 to 40 at one time. If you don't take a lot of photos then CJ and others have posted good info on what's available and how to do it. Don

The only problem with that is one of these days you're going to take an image you would REALLY like to get enlarged. There won't be enough pixels to get a decent enlargement.

when we get folks that don't understand we are always recommending some program they have to download to re-size and crop with and they are intimidated.
Paint is already in their box and all they have to do is follow the simple instructions and then they can attach the photo file to the post without having to upload it to a photo hosting site.

Perfection for those who have no clue or foundation to work from. For those who already have their chosen work flows, carry on.

From my windows 7 machine I simply select all of the pics I want to post using holding ctrl and clicking with the mouse and then right click the files and send to outlook and it automatically shrinks them and then I just save in a folder...

Was reading this post and thought I would give it a try. The smallest native file size on my camera is 720x480. did one that size. Did the other in my usual shooting size of 5184x3456. Used paint to reduce to 720x480. file sizes were 129kb and 7.22mb. Can you tell the difference?

Certainly not a big enough difference to notice.
For a freeware solution, irfanview is one I've been using for my casual photos for years - does batch processing as well. My favorite is still Picasa (freeware from Google) which I use to manage over 25,000 images. The ones I want to share I simply click and when uploaded will automatically be resized and automatically placed into web albums for web sharing.
