Pellet storage
« Reply #-1 on: August 18, 2018, 03:55:33 PM »
So I bought a huge bag of pellets. They are for my smoker tube which I think is a good product. To make things more manageable I took out all the pellets and put them in small ziplock bags. My question is will they get moist this way ? Should I poke holes in the tops of ziplock bags ? They are kept inside my pantry which is cool and typically air conditioned area

Assuming the pellets were dry, they should be fine in the zip-lock bags.
If they had any moisture in them, they might mold. JMHO.

As shipped, pellets are very, very dry and will not mold or mildew.  Store them in a dry place.  Zip bags will be fine.  Do not poke holes in the bags.  I have pellets that have been in storage for years in various types of containers -- no problems.  Just don't leave them open in an area where they could get rained on or something spilled on them.  I even have some torn bags that have no bad pellets because they were in a covered container.

I usually store most of my pellet stock in their original plastic bags inside a big "pool storage chest" and an old plastic 40 gallon trash can with a tight lid.  Keep a few near the cookers in those red and blue Kingsford charcoal tubs.

I actually just leave mine in their original bags, even open bags, in a plastic tote with a lid.
They are kept in a climate controlled area (inside), just to be safe.
But maybe that's not necessary. I don't know if they have a tendency to draw moisture.

Once I open a bag I put the rest of the bag in a NEW 5 gal pale and seal them up.

Inside in a climate controlled environment you really wouldn't have issues in the original bag and quart ziplock bags would work just fine.  I use an IRIS 55lbs Airtight Pet Food Container; it holds an entire bag of pellets and a large ice scoop.  It has been sitting outside in everything from sub-freezing temps to rainstorms to Texas summer heat with zero issues.

If you're dealing in smaller bags (20lb) a five-gallon bucket as noted by TMB would work ... if you're stressing it get one with a gamma seal lid.

I bought my food grade buckets and lids @ Home Depot. They have a food grade sticker on them. the lids are easy on/off, but still snap in place for a tight seal. Also use the same type buckets for pickling hams and bacon before smoking.
