Charcoal mixed with wood in a basket will burn longer unattended than wood splits alone.
Some times it just fun to sit & add wood every hour or two.
I do it both ways both create great food,

I'm a poker...The MES is great for unattended when I'm "just cooking" stuff, but when I want to be outside, I want to poke a fire.
Something in my genes, I guess...personal preference, though.
