Title: New Air Fryer
Post by: RAD on March 13, 2017, 10:19:56 AM
SAMS had the Power AirFryer XL 5.3 on sale for $99 so I decided it was time to give it a try. One issue I have is the fryer basket doesn’t slide in easily. I have to hold the bottom and push it in really slowly for it to catch. I am going to take it back today and get another one to see if there is just something wrong with this one.

Onion Rings were done first. I way over cooked them but it was a first run.

Some fired chicken. I need to work on my batter and how I apply it but I’ve always had issues making a good fried chicken.

Was it the best fried chicken I’ve had? No. But it was pretty darn good. I think with some testing this thing can make some good food. I am going to order a rack now.

First the food looks great! You will really like using this thing. But lets address the most common issue with these devices.

 - the "sticky basket" can be cured usually in a couple of ways that may save you the time and hassle of the return/replace:

1. Check the "rails" on the basket and the fryer for any sharp edges left over from the injection molding process of the manufacture of this item. remove any protrusions of "over-mold" materials. This can be done often with a butter or steak knife. Careful, and don't do more harm than good. ;)

2. Apply tiny amount of a very high temp. cooking grade oil such as coconut oil to the contact points of the rails with a q-tip or similar.

3. Pay close attention to the actual angle that you use to insert and extract the basket. YES..it makes a huge difference in how easily - or difficult this otherwise "no-thought should be required" step is. It is a weakness in most of the brands that I have looked at - and tells me the same set of dummies designed most of them on the market ;) :D.
I think much of this comes from the extreme heat then fairly fast cool down of these areas of the cooker. Some materials (plastics and metals in this case) can have dramatically differing co-efficients of expansion and contraction. So the design and manufacturing engineers should have consulted with e material suppliers engineers - and planned in more appropriate tolerances for the different materials - in the knowing that they will react to the expansion and contraction caused by large temperature swings.

Let me know if those help you.

Congrats!  Thats a great Price.  As Pam said try "swooping" the basket in. I had the same issue when I first got it and the swooping method seamed to help.  :)

What Pam said.
Also there is a YouTube video explaining the same procedure of using a scooping motion.

Thanks everyone. I will do search for the scooping motion, I think it a lot to do with the efficients of expansion and contraction. Like most things, one I learn it...

There is a lil latch that the center of basket goes into..if you tilt front down a lil bit then raise it, you'll have it..try it a few times..you will be glad you did..it's a learning thing..   .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

After all the great advice, I watched myself closely and noticed I wasn't getting one of the basket rails properly on the unit rails. Does anyone have link to a scooping method?

There is a learning curve (to the cooking times), but once you get it right you can make some great food.
Every time a try something different in the air fryer (and get it the way I like it) I add it to a chart I have of air fryer cooking times.
Then if I forget how long to cook it I just refer to my chart.  ;) ;)

Yeah, Tommy...we were in Sams last week and walked past a huge display of these.  I simply commented to Deb that a number of folks here had gotten them.  What a "stink eye" she gave me!

I just quit talking and kept walking...

Your wish is our command. New thread section for AIR FRYERS has now been created. We will try to search for current threads using the equipment and move them to the new section.

I forget how long I do onion rings, didn't make myself a chart like i should have. I just check them after a couple minutes and flip them. I tried doing a french bread pizza tonight. Ran it at 380 and after 3 minutes i gave it a check. Pepperonis had blown off, haha. Replaced them and ran it for another minute, cheese was melted and it was crisp so started eating, very center of the pizza wasn't done so ate half and threw it back in for 2 minutes and finished eating.
Not sure I could get the center done without burning the the edges and top. Need to experiment more. The jalapeno poppers turned out good though.

Yeah, Ray, let's see how many wings you can do in this cooker.  I think you hold the record for most wings cooked in TBE...

just sayin'...
