Title: Is This Normal?
Post by: CDN Smoker on April 26, 2013, 09:59:58 AM
I just received 40 bags of pellets  ;D not all mine  >:(

Anyway I noticed on the bag a line of what looks like small holes.

The 10 bags I have will last for a while and I am concerned about moisture.

Thanks for any comments.

I would contact the seller first and see what they say. I have never seen that with my pellet bags for my perfect mix. Not even that color, my bags are always clear.
I also like to put mine in these anyways
This pic was way back before I started using Perfect Mix pellets

Ditto.  Mine are clear as well, and I 2X the suggestion of putting them in sealed 5 gallon buckets.   It makes them a helluva lot easier to move/store.

I agree that the bags should not have holes in them ... but then what do I know !?  I store mine in sealed containers. You might want to look at the ones designed for charcoal storage.  Of course, 5 gallon buckets work great too.

Where did you find those?

I have similar ones with the Kingsford name on them. "Kingsford Kaddy".

I think I got mine at Lowes for around 12 bucks a pop..    Some clear, and some black.

Q: why are bags in the US clear and white in Canada. Also no Hickory was available up here.

I will be looking for pails but I am thinking my friends will be upset when I pass this along.

I received a pallet of 100% hickory a couple months ago. They were in the same white bags (shipped to NC) and had the same holes in them. I never really thought much about it. So I am going to say not abnormal.

What Squirtthecat said David.  The black ones are the "Kingsford Kaddy" which I bought at Lowe's and the clear ones are the ones I bought from MAK when I bought my pellet grill.  I think both are made by the same company.  They stack up real nice and it's easy to pour the pellets out through the lid  :)  Keeps charcoal and/or pellets nice and dry ...

I am going out on a limb here..and this is purely conjecture....

I think the holes are there for packaging reasons. I can imagine that if they did not have some way to vent - when the bags are being stacked - some may "blow a seam" if there is no way for them to "exhale" when another bag is dropped on them.

The idea is to just not store them in an area where they can get wet, or accrue moisture. ( like Houston...huh Mike ;)?)

I see those holes all the time. Not quite sure of the exact reason, but nothing to worry about.

I had some 5 gallon pails but they don't take a 40lb bag. Will the Kingford Kaddy take a 40lb bag?

I have been looking at these:

and also thinking about these:
http://www.osh.com/eng/product/behrens_20_gallon_galvanized_steel_utility_trash_can/6928600

We were loading up the Kingsford last night and there were too many black widows nestled in the bags for my likings...... ???

Hornzbee and myself went in on an order of these:

http://www.uline.com/BL_8173/Screw-Top-Pails

The lid is gasketed, and you need not turn too tight to get an air tight seal. The red lever on top is to release the lid for opening. The 6.5 gal. size will almost hold a 40 lb. bag of pellets. You can get smaller buckets if you you want a lighter load to carry.

Where I live it is important to keep things as dry as I can.

The only complaint I have about the Kingsford caddy ( And - I *DO* like the design...) is that the lids can crack from continued removal and replacement when filling them. This usually happens at a corner of the lid, from the flexing/stretching action required of the lid to "seat" the lid on the bucket.

Now - in all fairness tot eh product, I have been called the "un-offical stress tester" for Verizon by my sales rep of 14 years. ;D So - I am saying - if a product survives me - you can proudly tell folks it is "T tested and approved" - i.e. - gorilla proof :D :D :D

Ok let me get this all straightened out...  1) our Perfect Mix is almost always put in CLEAR bags... except when some bone head forgets... (the bonehead is me) to keep clear bag stock in the place! So our Canadian distributors first order was all white bags. Also some other regulars customers in the states. SORRY for the confusion!! And the Canadian distributor hasn't gotten any 100% Hickory yet because they wanted to see how well the first order would go. So CDN Smoker, keep on them to get our 100% Hickory! As far as the small holes down the side of the bag... Teesquare is correct! They do need to breath a bit. Our clear bags also have some breathing built in. It isn't an issue and never has been.
Thanks for posting the question!! That is why we are here!!!!

Thanks Chris for getting back to us.

I actually throught we were doing a very good job of having a civil conversation about your product. ;D

Just side note, from ordering these pellets I found out my neighbour down the street is a smoker and his Dad smokes pretty much everyday. Finally someone to talk to in person.

Do you do anything special to clean them before using?
