Title: 61st ANNUAL MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES BARBEQUE
Post by: smokeasaurus on August 14, 2014, 08:34:56 PM
As you might know by now, Wendy and I are planning on pitching our tents up in Crestline, California. Crestline is a wonderful little mountain community where people get involved and do good things. Our new best buddy Aaron (Crestlodge Historic Mountain Cabins) told us about this wonderful event that has been going on for a long long time. It is coming up September 6th and would like to invite my local (and not so local) forum friends to come on up the mountain for a darn good time. Wendy and I have volunteered to help with the pre-BBQ prep (y'all know Old Smoke likes to do pre-BBQ prep  ;) ) and we are quite honored to be a part of this time honored wonderful event that happens every summer in Crestline.

Here is some info to get ya all started. As I get more info, I will get it posted here and of course you can bet you will get a bunch of pictures of the event from us.

Hope to see ya in Crestline on the 6th of September, until then I got some good reading for ya ( and a cool poster as well  8) ):

Here is your reading material to get you going:

61st ANNUAL MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES BARBEQUE
IN TWIN PEAKS

For the sixty-first year in a row, the Mountain Communities BBQ will again be held in Twin Peaks, at the Rim of the World Masonic Lodge on Saturday September 6th. This annual event has long been the summer high point for thousands of mountain residents and summer visitors for over half a century, and this year promises to be as good as ever.

Six hundred pounds of seasoned prime beef and six hundred pounds of pork will be loaded into the old fashioned, deep pit BBQ and slow cooked for over twenty hours, arising just before noon on Saturday to meet the hungry masses attending. Complimenting the beef and pork as usual, will be the infamous “Hillbilly BBQ Sauce” and an abundance of side dishes including baked beans, cole-slaw, fresh rolls and cookies for dessert!

A wide variety of curiosities and attractions are always part of this annual get-together. The car and motorcycle show will be back as will be the music, door-prizes, and an assortment of local vendors with goodies for the young and old alike. Also on permanent display, and of particular interest, is “The Ol’ Logging Wagon”. Originally constructed in 1898, this enormous solid-wheel wagon was used to haul freshly fallen timber to saw mills that were active in the San Bernardino Mountains at that time. This monument is a significant part of the area’s rich history, and if you ask any one of the old-timers that will likely be present, you’re sure to get more information about that wagon than you probably want.

Tickets for the BBQ will be available the day of the event at the Masonic Center, 26012 Hwy-189, in Twin Peaks, and by phone in advance at 909-589-6281 with serving to start at high noon, and ending 5:00 pm-ish. Ticket donations are $12 for adults and $8 for children. You can also buy meat by the pound at $8.00 per lb.

Not only an established social event for the local families, friends and neighbors that live on the mountain, this yearly gathering also provides folks from all over the Inland Empire and the High Desert an opportunity to beat-the-heat, make some new friends, and enjoy some real good food in the cool shade of the tall pines.

Best regards,

 Aaron Creighton

Wendy and I are really looking forward to making this an annual event as well as finding other helpful things to do to help out our future community.

If ya need a place to stay, you can always give Aaron a call at Crest lodge. I don't know if he is booked up but I can tell ya this event sounds like it gets one heck of a turn-out  :)

Smoke, are you moving up the mtn?I know some places to eat if you arent familiar with Crestline/Lake Arrowhead area..

You will be at 5 points, where five roads meet at toptown. The cafe there,Crestline Cafe gets the #1 rating for food up here, especially the breakfasts and chili.Large portions and reasonable prices too.

Chef Cindy's Cafe in VOE has very good breakfasts' too.Maybe a mile from you?Rate #2.

The stockade in town has BBQ,but Ive never had it,some say its good.

A real kick is the A across from McDonalds, run by an old German lady.Ever seen the soup Nazi on Seinfeld, she is his mother.Told a guy one day....NO double cheeseburger for you,Youre too fat!!You get single. Another time told a guy....A large shake,I dont think so.You dont need that, you get a regular!! Just a junk food type place with an honest burger menu, beats McD by a mile. She is open.....oh.....when she feels like it.

Some people like Toni's Mexican,Right across street from the Market,Goodwins, which BTW makes a killer large combo meat sub with all the goodies.

For pizza, its up the main road,HWY 18 about 6 miles from lake Gregory is LouEddies Pizza, hands down the most authentic pizza on the hill, last time there they were working on the microbrewery, dont  know if that flew or not,but hey, they even make their own sausage for the artisan pizza.Plus it was an old mining camp, old buildings, awesome outdoor patio/courtyard to eat on,this is a killer winner of a food stop.

Fine dining,Look up the Mission Inn in Riverside, awesome old buildings and very beautiful,Sunday brunch is killer good, and meals are sooooo good.Moderate priced. It is indeed just like being in one of the Missions, historic landmark and all.You can also spend a few hours walking the street there, lots of cool museums.Old Town Riverside.

Muebe,you could make this. ;) ;)

We ate at the Bear Family restaurant the other day and they have some seriously good Chix Fried Steak. We have been hitting Goodwins for their dry aged rib-eyes to grill in the evenings  :P :P

I saw the A frame hamburger joint yesterday morning and we will hit that next weekend for lunch. They got a retro looking bowling alley over there as well.......

My neighbor was talking about the 40 dollar steak dinner he made for his GF from them, and said its really something you have to try.Goodwins is a real trip for sure.

Spuds-the man who gets his meat at Staters,LOL.

Yeah, actually not a bad bowling alley.

Is your wife from up here, weve been here since late 90's I guess.Sure is a lot different from down the hill,I drive down there and understand what causes heart attacks.I like 50 mph is HARD to do up here,so much more relaxed.

Wendy was born in Iowa, and recently lived in Lake Elsinore. We have both always wanted "Main Street USA" and we found it in our own backyard and we can afford it. We put an offer on a house over in Cedar Pines Park at 140,000 and in 2007 before the crash it was over 400,000.......

I belong to a Jeepster club, got a friend in CPP.Yes,real deals in housing here,we just have a small house, but works for us.No money worries because of it.Thats been so nice, crash didnt freak us out like so many had happen.

I like people are so much better at live and let live, not all freaked out like the homeowners association types that want to micromanage your existence.I pretty much do as we want and appreciate having good neighbors, both true in my hood here.Nobody cares if you have chickens,or your neighbor puts up a gazebo or whatever.

Add in the fine summers, very little summer smog and have blue skies, yet close enough to urban centers for good jobs....and tolerate driving when its snowing, its my version of the good life

I agree. Mountain living is the way to go. If we walk north down our street we can look out and see Silverwood Lake. We will be at the NW tip of Crestline if all goes well. Some of the locals never even chain in the winter. 8)

my 1997 dodge truck 4x4 diesel with BFG TA radials Ive never chained it yet, been thru heavy snow up and down the desert side. The BFG's are great ice grippers too, look around, see em on a lot of vehicles here.Probably other great tires too, just the BFGs I know personally, they wont disappoint, high miles, smooth and quiet year round too.

Sure did come out good,ya'll sure did a fine job all around,we will be there next year for sure, only a work engagement could stop us.

A VERY nice event,Mrs had such a good time,we thank you very much!!She has remarked several times now how much she enjoyed it,cant ask for better response from a crowd than that.

Say,curious,is it a fund raiser,or just a community event because the Lodge just does it for all? Whatever, folks sure did the mtn proud, such NICE people everywhere!

Also Mrs wanted to buy some sauce, maybe next year, hint hint,it really was that good!

LOL,Mrs found Rocky right off the bat, thats how we were able to find Scott and Wendy so easily. We have gone to the dog parks so many times,I know more of the dogs than the peoples.(Need to get out more,LOL ::) 8) )

Spuds thanks for coming and I'm very happy you enjoyed it!

The funds we a raise there go to several things. They enable us to do the annual Thanksgiving Feast where we feed some 400 people free Thanksgiving dinners. We also do Christmas food baskets for people who need them. Also, every year we donate to the Raising a Reader Foundation, the Shriner's Hospitals, and the William and Beverly Rainbolt Language Learning Center down in San Bernardino where they do some amazing work with language and reading disabilities for kids. So your contribution goes to some pretty good causes!

Well, I finally got my camera to post the pics on my computer of the picnic. The meat was seasoned in a time honored mixture and then wrapped in white butcher paper. It was then packed in muslim cloth, then wrapped in burlap and wired up. Meat was tossed into a wheelbarrow and loaded up in the back of a truck. At the site of the underground pit, a through was set up with water and more rub. The burlap bundles of meaty goodness was then dredged in the water mixture and tossed onto heavy gauge cooking grates. Then large metal plates were lowered on top of that. We got our shovels out and covered everything up in dirt. Aaron led us in prayer and placed a sprig of pine at the opening of the pit.

The meat stayed in the cooker for 24 hours where it was pulled out and shredded to order. I met John Williams who helped build the Masonic Lodge and has been at all 61 barbeques. He is a great guy and he assured me he will be at the next one. You can bet Old Smoke and Wendy will be there.

The food was insanely good, the barbeque sauce somebody made was the best I have ever had. This a wonderful time honored event and I humbled to be a part of it. I will never miss one and I sure hope John Williams will be there for many more.......................

It was a real pleasure meeting Mr. and Mr.s Spuds at the BBQ that day. We should be moved in about 3 weeks and we will hook up with ya fine folks and cook something.

I'd love to meet you too Spud. Perhaps at my next annual function which we should be doing soon. I do an annual "Fest" here at Crest Lodge in Crestline. Always themed. We have had "Baconfest", "Ribfest", and "Meat and Greet". Its about time to do another one. I'll keep you informed.
