Currently, each user is assigned a "title" based on their post count. For example, a "Newbie" has 0 - 49 posts; a "Jr. Member" requires 50 - 99 posts; "Full Member" needs 100 - 249 posts; "Sr. Member" is 250 - 499 posts; and a "Hero Member" has more than 500 posts on the forum.
Our site is fortunate to have members who have contributed thousands of posts to other forums, so it doesn't seem logical to declare that member a "Newbie."
We'd like your input on better titles. Let us know if you like any of these, or add a better group of titles to the poll.

Just out of curiosity, why do we have "group categories" at all? Why not delete them except maybe for administrators?

Not a bad idea Oh Wise One

That is a great idea...keeps everything even steven 8)

If we are talking about the ranking of the member by his/her number of posts or time on the board I think newbie, full member, senior member or such would be fine. I never look at them anyway other than to see if someone is a newbie so I can welcome them. Once they have made several posts I recognize them by their forum name and don't worry about how long they have been here.
-
Good call 2-pockets. Maybe the first -5- posts a new member can be tagged a newbie and then clear it off. Sometimes people post without introducing themselves.
Or
maybe the first post by a new member HAS to be in the introduce yourself thread before they can post in other threads....just sayin..............
-
Presumably you could still see the number of posts even if there's no descriptor.
-
Just out of curiosity, why do we have "group categories" at all? Why not delete them except maybe for administrators?
The term "categories" in this use is not a segregational identifier. You could exchange a number of terms that may sound more pleasant I suppose - but for the running of the site - the software sees all of us in "groups" -or categories based on frequency of use. Just an accounting tool for the program. It means nothing more....
And - sure we could delete any reference to your "status" ( ;D like...the number of posts really means anything anyway - right?)
But I want to see a quorum of opinion before we do that. Maybe one of you enterprising folks would like to set up poll for the various ideas thrown about here?
Capt Jack...what is the current limit on Kayaks? Do they have a "slot size"? How do you cook them? I am a trout fisherman, and have been a bass fisherman - but have never fished for kayak...Bet they are tough if not fixed right. ;D
And - turtle...I really expected you would want some funny terms to describe various levels of posts..... ;) ;D
-
When you're known as "tortuga elegante," funny terms lose their luster.
-
Your secret is safe among friends turtle....( in latin your name sounds a bit like an interior decorator-tortoise :o ;D )
-
I like Newbie for the first few posts..then ALMOST EXPERT for the rest..OR...let us choose our own..OR ..none at all. Why do we track counts anyways? To see how popular the site is? How about a counter then? Pam ★*˚°。°
-
Tracking - or counting of posts does help the owners of a site see how the site is being used, how often and by whom. It helps to tailor content to the user group, and it is part of the data required to try and recruit any support from advertisers. There are a number of good reasons for post counts, but they are all only metrics, just accounting data. Purely numbers - and nothing to to do with an individuals worth, or experience.
-
Cousin Jack, I'd like a slice of kevlar, medium rare with nice grill marks.

Everyone is a "newbie" at something, sometime. What one gets for a title doesn't matter all that much. Good posters may be old vets on other forums or may be brand new to the hobby. Just post and have fun.

Hub, I never look at that anyway, which is why I probably don't remember to welcome the new members as much as I should. And from reading your background and posts, "newbie" may refer to the time you have been here but not to your experience and skills.
-
Well said - Hub and TP!...Well said indeed.
We are the most friendly group around, but sometimes we all forget that new folks here may not know that yet.
So I too will try to be more vigilant at making the new members feel at home.

Like the old Country and Western song, or something, "I don't care what you call me...just call me." Dee

I absolutely enjoy the good feelings from this forum. Warm and friendly. Thank you! Phil

"I don't care what you call me just don't call me late for supper" sorta fits with this group
-
Count me in with the doesn't really matter crowd as well. Even though I have thousands of post on another forum, being a "newbie" sure didn't cause me to loose any sleep last night! ;)
Perhaps instead of "Newbie", "New Member" would be more accurate?
-
I voted but really it does not matter, I'm with Capt and Pete on this one.
Ditto - Better late, than never to voice my 2 cents, especially if I want to become a Full or Sr. Member................lol
-
does not matter to me.
-
I never even look at the designation. If someone comes on and posts they are new member I try and welcome them. If I see a name I don't recognize I look at the number of posts instead of their rank. There are a heck of a lot of "newbies" here that are freaking experts. I come in a couple of times every day and click on the "show unread posts since last visit" and read every single post. Went down to the beach last weekend for 4 days and even though I took my notebook I didn't have time to keep up. I had major withdrawal but major fun catching up when I got back.

Hmmm so why is there blue ink on the board. Lets just make it one color.................. BLACK

I think we have reached a quorum of opinion on this topic...... :D ANd - that seems to be, that it really does not matter.
But - if I mis-read this, feel freel to let me know! ;D

It is an option that everyone has when you are on the reply page. Sometimes I will use a color. It is just for fun - and to make something stand out.

...so why is there blue ink on the board...
Devo - three reasons.
1. Primarily so my aging (and often whisky-clouded) eyes can see/correct/edit what I've typed before I hit the "Post" button, but also
2. So that you will be able to easily identify my contributions and pay close attention to their invaluable content, or
3. So that you will be able to easily identify my contributions and know you won't miss anything if you skip over them without a further glance.
I think we have reached a quorum of opinion on this topic...... it really does not matter...
Finally this horse is approaching the "too dead to beat" stage. Maybe.
