I may show my age, when I was young growing up in upper lower Michigan, this was before there was a Mackinaw bridge and a bridge from Sault Ste. Marie to Canada. My father went into Canada driving West above Lake Superior on a road that ended in WAWA. At that time, there was no road around the complete Northern route above Lake Superior to Thunder Bay. He said that the road ended at WAWA; where do we get that name now about gas stations? He said that the people up there were not used to seeing outsiders, and were somewhat outloof.
