Title: i want to make my own sauerkraut
Post by: sparky on September 11, 2014, 10:43:36 PM
africanmeat post got me thinking.  showed his post to my wife.  she said you love sauerkraut, pickled veges and those icky saloon eggs.  "get what you need and start it up.  you need another hobby besides smoking ribs."  she is tired of eating ribs.   I love how it taste tangy.  I need a fermentation pot, cabbage corer and shredder?  any company ya'll order your stuff from?   8)

Hi Spark, if you want to keep your cost down africanmeat has a great looking glass jar for making kraut. Me. I'm a sucker for any crocks so had to get a German style crock I think I paid over $100 for it. I see it is now on sale for $79 but would have to spend $10 more for free shipping. Here is the link.

I also have bought stuff from here. http://www.harvestessentials.com/31060-tsm-german-style-crock-pot.html?utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=cse

They now have a US made fermenting crock I would love to have. But I don't think I will ever be able to make enough kraut to pay for the one I have! Hope this helps you out. Don

I just use a 6 gallon food bucket with a screw top gamma lid, loosely screwed on.Cut cabbage with a knife, add non iodized salt, weigh it down with a plate and its sauerkraut.Cheap and easy.

here is a thread on mine, only photobucket isnt showing pics, they have a problem at this moment, hopefully up soon

I use the culturesforhealth.com for my sauerkraut..and 3 tbs salt per 5 lbs of cabbage. I shred mine in my KitchenAid food processor, I have the big one.  Let is sit for about 45 days..I like mine sour.  Pam   .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.
