So it seems that we are forgoing a usual Christmas dinner this year. No ham but rather baby backs instead! My brother-in-law, Kevin, requested ribs. I am going to do an experiment and make something different. I most likely will do a test run this weekend so I don't end up using the family as guinea pigs. Last Christmas we bought my mother-in-law an electric smoker and she loves it. We are going to let her make some ribs and we'll bring some too. It'll be a friendly little "throwdown" of sorts :)
I am going to marinate my ribs in Redd's Apple Ale and then smoke as I normally do but I probably won't use my go to bbq sauce that I always use on ribs (and moinks). I may make something more "Christmasy" to go on them. Any ideas from the masses of a good sauce recipe?

I've made Fireball Whiskey BBQ Sauce that has that little cinnamon kick that was pretty tasty :P
-
Sounds good, but i have family coming over so we are doing finger foods. I'll save ribs for when i can cook again

My wife picked ours up at the Naval Air Station Commissary in Jacksonville. I couldn't find any locally. You might check with Target since their website says in stores only.

Since you're going to soak your ribs in Redds Apple Ale, there are many recipes online that use apple ale / cider in the sauce if you'd like to have that apple profile in the taste. Here's one for Double Apple Ribs...

Will check NAS next time I am in Jacksonville but I can't do Target. Target don't want CCW's and they let men use the ladies bathroom.

Those are beautiful. Put some mint leaves on it and ya have a Christmas look.
-
Ribs have been the menu of choice for our Christmas dinners for several years now. Since it is so busy around the house I just hang 'em in the PBC then give 'em a coat of whatever sauce I've got on hand when they come out. Nobody ever complains!

OK I wanted to try the Big Red Soda Rib sauce but look at the price I found at Amazon.com
Big Red Cream Soda - 12/12 oz
by Big Red Sodas
$ 19 99
Prime
What is the normal store price?
-
I don't think the cream soda is the one you want but in a related note, I can't find Big Red soda anywhere around me! I guess they don't sell it in GA and I sure ain't paying $20.00 for a bottle of it!

It actually is cream soda RG. I couldn't find it anywhere in Georgia either. That is why my wife picked up some in Florida.

I've seen people say get strawberry soda and put a little vanilla in it.
-
Good reason to do a run to Jacksonville, wine and dine and spend the night in a beach hotel.

Really? Egads! I can't for the life of me drink cream soda :P Never been a fan but I suppose if all I am doing is reducing it to make a sauce I could power through it, lol.
I wonder if Publix has it in Georgia? That's one place I didn't look.

Think of it as a strawberry cream soda. Some say to substitute strawberry soda with a little vanilla in it. You only need 1/2 cup of the syrup reduced from 20oz. Publix by me only carries the cans. You honestly don't get much flavor at all of the soda IMO, it's more for the sweetness and the bright red color that comes with the syrup.
-
Hmmmm....I could just blast the sauce with red food coloring then :P
-
RG, just use some ginger ale or club soda, for the fizz with some maraschino cherry juice added to it. .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

Ok the verdict is in! I made the ribs yesterday. Marinated in Redd's Apple Ale. Made up a batch of fireball whiskey bbq sauce. Smoked the ribs on the Traeger (didn't feel like using the KBQ!!!). The verdict? Worse ribs I've made in a LONG time, lol!!
My wife asked me why I even bothered to change my method and I told her I wanted something different. It turns out that it might be best to leave well enough alone or as she put it "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
The apple ale gave it a funky taste and that fireball bbq sauce absolutely sucks. Oh well......at least I have a good bit of the whiskey left to make Fireball Pumpkin pies!
Back to using my tried and true recipe ;)
-
lol I enjoyed the fireball sauce :P

This is my tried and true sauce I use as well as an apple variation of it. I've won many bbq contests at our office and have had people tell me to sell it lol.
1c Ketchup
2/3c Brown Sugar
1/2c Beer
1/2c Soda (I use coke)
1/3c Real Maple Syrup or Molasses
6oz Tomato Paste
3 tbs Mustard
3 tbs Apple Cider Vinegar
1 tbs Sea Salt
1 tbs Dry Mustard
1 tbs Worcestershire Sauce
1 tbs Garlic Powder
1 tbs Onion Powder
2 tsp Thyme
1 tsp Black Pepper
1 tsp Paprika
1/2 tsp Cayenne
For an apple version since you used the angry orchard. I just prep my ribs the same as usual, dry brine, then rub. I let the sauce add the apple flavor.

I'll get to those recipes in due time, thanks for sharing! I made that fireball exactly as the recipe calls for minus the Frank's Red Hot. Not my cup of tea and I couldn't even taste the fireball at all. I am always tinkering with sauces, it drives my wife nuts. The garage fridge has become the bbq sauce fridge. These days though, if I make it and don't like I just ditch it. No need saving it.
My normal ribs look like this

This reminds me, I need to make some bacon tots soon!

Since this seems to have morphed into a sauce thread, I don't feel like I'm hijacking.
I'm in the middle of my first run at the Big Red Sauce and I have one simple question . . .
Every single one of the ingredients that go into the Big Red Sauce have a virtually unlimited shelf life, three of them may need refrigeration, but still pretty much unlimited. Why, then, is the completed sauce only good for one week ? ? ? ?
I ask, primarily, because it doesn't make any sense, but also because I'm making triple batch becuase my daughter brought me 2 x 2L bottles (only using one bottle on the first run).

$4.17/12pk here in San Antonio area. Big Red is a big seller in Texas.

So, a 2L bottle of Big Red makes a little over two quarts of finished sauce.
Hopefully, it'll last longer than a week ! ! ! !
