Title: Barbecue in the Bible!
Post by: Hub on October 15, 2017, 07:34:09 AM
I have, in my writings for various purposes and publications, theorized on several occasions that barbecue was "born" in several different ways, most likely by accident when a haunch of wooly mammoth fell into the fire and some Neanderthal liked the aroma of it and gave it the taste test that ultimately resulted in our inherited love for meat burned in the back yard.  That's my theory, anyway.

Along the same path of thought I recently received an absolutely remarkable e-mail from a "friend in smoke" who shares my love of things pondered or invented to explain our addiction to meat and fire.  In it, he revealed to me the origin of barbecue as it is given in the Old Testament.  To wit:

Gordon-

I cant’ stop thinking about the scripture our pastor preached from last Sunday (Genesis 15).  It brought one of those wonderful moments where you see something in scripture with great clarity for the first time.

Let’s set the scene:

Abram, at the Lord’s command, gathers several animals, butchers them, and lays them out.

And then, in verse 17:

(NIV)

When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.

(KJV)

And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

So you have meat, and then the Lord brings Smoke and Fire.  Smoke+Fire+Meat = Barbecue

Genesis 15 is where God reveals the wonders of barbecue to mankind.  This has to be one of the 10 most important moments in the Bible, and somehow I missed it before.

Tommy

I've shared this revelation with several friends on the competition circuit just for general knowledge and the improvement of human erudition, but my most practical use of the newfound knowledge came not long ago when I had occasion to have to teach my Sunday School class from Genesis 15.

I researched the scripture thoroughly and gave a most detailed account of the discourse it contains between God and Abram and all its importance to the roles and relationships between man and God as it applied to the Covenants so thoroughly covered in the Old Testament.  At the close of my lesson I read the class my letter above.  Guess what they remember about the lesson now?

You will oft find me saying that barbecue is wonderful, tangible proof that God loves us.  Now you know how that all started!

Posted on a Sunday morning.

End of sermonette  ::)

Pretty much everything one needs to know about life is in there, if one just looks for it (and will accept it)

Thanks Hub.

"Holy Smokes..." uh.... well - maybe that is where the expression comes from? ;D

Interesting to know that BBQ started as a Jewish tradition...... - sans pork and seafood of course.... ;) ;D ;D ;D
