Got To Love a Deal!
« Reply #-1 on: July 25, 2016, 11:18:26 AM »
I have a friend that works for one of the big national food distributors and just about every week they have stuff they have to get rid of because of soon to be expiration dates. The thing is it's fresh not frozen dates and the stuff is actually moved to the freezer. The dates may be weeks or sometimes months away or it stuff they have only a few of or maybe a lot of. Crazy! I just ordered a case of 33 lbs of pork bellies for fifty eight cents a pound. Usually it's $2.49-2.89 a pound. I see bacon in the future!

Just got home and finished putting stuff in the freezers. I'm worn out! Lol..... Along with the pork bellies I ordered I ordered a case of cut up chickens which contains 14 head of chickens cut up into eight pieces per head. Over 45 lbs of chicken for $10.48. Lol.... About 35 lbs of pork bellies for $9.86. 18lbs of boneless/skinless turkey breast for $24.53 and 10 lbs of smoked Gouda cheese for $3.48.That comes up to 108 lbs of food for $53.06 with tax. Lol....... If I threw away or gave away half of that it would still be a deal. I wish I had a walk in freezer. Lol........

Cold smoke the gouda with a mild wood for a couple hours then seal it, fridge it and forget it for about 6 weeks (4 minimum).  Best cheese ever for sammies. You might have to put some jugs of frozen water in the smoker to keep the temps below 90F this time of year. One of the things I still use my Bradley for with a-maze-n tubes to generate smoke with minimum heat. Let it get too hot and cheesesicles will be the result! Wish I could find belly that cheap!

A chicken head cut into eighths is pretty small ;)

That's just how they refer to one whole chicken but cut into eight pieces.

2 each thighs, drumsticks, breast halves and wings. I remember when I was a kid growing up, there were 7 kids in our family plus mom and dad (who will be celebrating their 69th anniversary in early August). My dad worked two jobs (bagging feed in a mill at night and selling welders during the day) and my mom babysat for people and took in laundry to be home with us kids.  Not sure how old I was before I realized that sweet corn wasn't an entree, white rice wasn't a meal, and mom probably didn't REALLY prefer backs and necks when it came to chicken!

Nice, always good to learn new things.  I had never heard of it called that.

As a side note, we had a Fried chicken place that sold the necks and backs as part of the chicken price.  It was a little mom/ pop place and the only one I found that had it.  It was actually pretty good, but not a lot of meat.  Of course, that was 20+ years ago in my home town.  Never saw it since!
