Dodged a ̶B̶u̶l̶l̶e̶t, err Rock... in My Pellets - UPDATE!
« Reply #-1 on: April 02, 2017, 07:13:33 PM »
Well, I FINALLY had a day when I was both free and NO RAIN to do the initial burn-in for the new MAK 1 Star.

All was going well, then I decided to open the hopper door to check the pellets, and WOW... am I glad I did, because I saw this:
That is a piece of rock, in amongst some lumber Jack 100% Oak pellets... AND IT'S IN MY BRAND SPANKING NEW MAK 1 STAR GRILL!!! ???

Here are a couple closeups. It was pretty well covered with fine sawdust.

You can imagine my horror. After all, this is the initial burn-in of my BRAND new MAK Grill!!!  What if I hadn't checked the pellets and it had gotten down into the auger tube?

Now, I have to say that I've been using Lumber Jack pellets for the past 4 1/2 years, and this is the first time I've ever had ANY kind of issue with them.  They have always been a great pellet, and I am seriously hoping this was just a fluke, especially since I have a few hundred pounds of their pellets sitting in my garage.

I'll be contacting them tomorrow about this to at least let them know, and I'll keep everyone posted.  I'm truly hoping to report a good experience with their customer service!

Cliff

OUCH!  I must say though... I think of MAK as the Vitamix of pellet poopers.  I'll bet your 1 Star would have ground that rock to dust  8)

I am very happy to report that Great Lakes Renewable Energy/Lumber Jack pellets was EXTREMELY quick to respond!

I talked with Chrissy, and she quickly forwarded the info and pics to the plant manager who very quickly identified exactly what this was.  Believe it or not it was NOT a rock (even though it looks and feels exaclty  like one).

She called me back and asked me to see if I could easily break it in half, which it did, and sure enough it broke and the edges crumbled into super fine wood dust.  WOW, I'm telling you that thing looked and felt like a piece of rock!

Every now and then, during maintenance, they have to clean these compressed wood dust deposits out the chutes. A piece somehow got past their screening process, which is suppose to catch anything extraneous, and ended up in my bag of pellets.  Chances are, had it gotten into my auger tube, it would have simply sheared off into smaller pieces and simply burned along with the pellets.

They were extremely grateful for calling and sending them the pics, and they are going to review their screening process to make sure this doesn't happen again.  They are also sending be a new 40lb bag of pellets to replace the bag this came from.

I can happily give a two thumbs up for Lumber Jack's top notch Customer service,    and will continue buying their products!  :)

I have also burned lots and lots and lots of Lumberjack pellets and have never found a problem with them. I am extremely glad to see it was a fluke and that Lumberjack has outstanding customer service.

OUCH!  I must say though... I think of MAK as the Vitamix of pellet poopers.  I'll bet your 1 Star would have ground that rock to dust  8)

We maaaaaay have done some testing with various objects lying around the MAK office to see what the auger will really break.... ;)   hehehe

Glad you got it sorted, Cliff!

Just in case anyone would like to know: the auger is set up with a shear pin, so if you ever DID get a proper rock in there and it jammed things up (or if you let the pellets get wet and have an auger jam), the auger would snap that pin instead of burning up the motor.   (It's a socket head cap screw 6-32 x 3/4", with a 6-32 nylock nut, but if it ever happens to anyone out there  please just give us a call and we'll get you sorted!)

Cliff is a Pro, but if anyone needs help taking the auger assembly apart, we've also got a instruction sheet on our FAQ page on the MAK website.
