Spices, Rubs, Herbs - They're Everywhere!!!
« Reply #-1 on: February 20, 2013, 11:31:18 AM »
I was looking through my spice shelves recently and wondered if my spice shelves were typical of other BBQ cooks.  I didn't bother to include all my "overstocks" as I keep them in several sealed containers. My wife thinks I have way too many spices in my collection.  She may be right.  She could get along just fine with salt, garlic salt and black pepper.  I, on the other hand, will always add a new spice or herb to my stash.  I keep only those spices/herbs that I use frequently, with a few exceptions.  I regularly "cull" my spices and herbs if they are too old to keep any longer. Here is a look at my collection.

First up is my spice drawer, located right next to my cook top.

Next is the upper cabinet above the spice drawer.  It actually took three pictures to include everything.  The spices in the front are used most often.  Here is the left side.

Next is the center.

And finally the right side.

The next set of pictures were taken in my pantry.  This is where most all my rubs, spices and herbs used to make rubs or season sausage are located.  You will probably see a few familiar names.

Now that I have shown you mine, show me yours!!

Somebody get a label maker for Christmas? I have about half that much and the wife gives me the stink eye. New stuff is stored in my garage to avoid detection.

WOW

I probably have close to 100
but your collection blows mine away
much more organized than mine too  ;)

for the last few years all my family and friends think I need more spices anytime they buy me a gift  ;)

So true Captain, whenever it is gift giving season and you are thinking about gifts for someone that owns a pit, rubs and seasonings are the first thing to come to mind.

Okay Art, what do you do for entertainment?  You know where everything is -- everything is in its place.  Life must be boring when you can go right to the cabinet or drawer and pick out the jar, neatly labeled.  At my house we have three shelves full of spices plus a couple of drawers and then there's the stuff that never really gets put away.  My system is I start looking at the top shelf first, then move downward until I find what I'm after.  The stuff I knock off and have to pick up goes over on the counter for a while until can find another place for it.  This system works well because that jar is always in the last place I look for it.  Also, if I don't find it after 30 minutes of searching, I go to the store and buy some more because I probably don't have it.

Last year I started putting my spices that I buy in bulk in these jars:

And cause I was lazy I just cut out the name for the lid:

Put them back in the box they came in:

Store them in the garage refrigerator:

As you can see I have more spices to put in jars too.  A lot of the spices I use are for fresh sausage and baking.  My "mixed" spices for grilling/smoking and everyday use are in the pantry. (which is a little messy so we won't go there right now :-[
