LA Big5K
« Reply #-1 on: March 17, 2013, 08:34:56 AM »
So I raced in the LA Big5K yesterday...

I can say that first off this race was all hills! And those hills were steep!!! I was very happy with my pace considering that I am not used to running such steep hills. I had many runners who blew by me early in the race who were huffing and puffing on the last hill as I passed them. I was able to maintain my steady pace for the entire race and the new shoes preformed really well!

There were 3,600 participants including the walkers. And of course the walkers tend to get in the way of the runners. They are supposed to start far back so the runners can get out first but no one pays attention. They all moved up in a huge group to the starting line causing a huge bottleneck you gotta wade through to get moving. It took me a couple minutes to get to the starting line after the race had started! But as soon as you hit the first hill they all are left behind. I think at least 2 minutes could have been taken off my time due to having to deal with all the slower people!

I finished in the top 60 for my age group, top 400 for my gender and in the top 700 for the race.

And I did beat my bosses boss time by about 4 minutes and he is a avid runner ;)

Here is the screenshot from the Nike+ app. It shows the map of the race. I started the app when the race started and you can see that there was a 2 minutes span before I even made it to the starting line due to the crowd. The orange areas are hills. The red areas represent the steep hills...

Great Job and great time. You will find running in a mob isn’t easy but you still maintained a good time. Did they have plentiful adult beverages after the race?

Thanks!

No unless water is an adult beverage ;)  The race started at 8am so no adult beverages.

Yeah I had to do a lot of evasive maneuvering to get around the mob.
