Now if I only like to eat them I would be in the money. But the best sturgeon bate around. Been closed for the last few years and they let us dip today.  There are a ton of these things.  I will try and get a video later once the river clears up a bit.  Took us maybe 1/2 an hour to get 4 limits.

A coworker who has never dipped before.
Dip net in. And drag down river

And pull up smelt

A couple of our Legions here in NE Iowa have a Smelt fry every April.  One of my fondest childhood memories was working at the smelt fry and getting to eat all I wanted for free.

I haven't had fried smelt in years.  That last time I remember having them I was given a plate that was piled high.  Couldn't finish them all.

The pictures bring back memories from my childhood in Michigan.  We used to go out a night on the small rivers with lanterns and use dip nets.  When they were running, it only took a short time to get a wash tub full.  In the Winter, my father and his buddies had a fish shanty on Crystal lake.  They had homemade reels on the ceiling and used multiple hooks with small live minnows for bait.  They tied a rubber band in line, and watched for the band stretching when they got a bite.  I remember these Winter smelt being much larger.  Also, my Grandmother fried them in flour after cutting off the heads and gutting with a pair of scissors.  They looked just like the pictures in this post.  As a kid, I could not believe that my Grandfather ate them whole, bones and all.  He also liked the crispy tails.  Fond memories.
