Home made Jan's I use a lot,
Jan's Dry Rub
From KyNola
My friend has a commercial BBQ restaurant and gave me some of his rub. He would not however give me his recipe so I put my wife on a mission to find something very similar on the internet and then we would tweak it to match his. Here is the best effort. It only has 14 ingredients and makes a bunch. Thought you might like to take a look.
Ingredients:
1 cup + 4 tbsp sugar
1/4 cup Lawry’s seasoned salt
1/4 cup garlic salt
1/4 cup + 1 1/2 tsp celery salt
1/4 cup onion salt
1/2 cup paprika
3 Tbsp chili powder
2 Tbsp black pepper
1 Tbsp lemon pepper
2 tsp celery seed
2 tsp dry ground sage
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp dry ground thyme
1/2 tsp cayenne
Directions:
Place all ingredients in a large bowl and mix until well blended. Store in a cool area away from light in air tight jar or sealable plastic bag.
Hope you enjoy.
KyNola
Comment by Habanero Smoker: I applied this rub to ribs, and everyone enjoyed them. For best results give the ribs a liberal application of the rub. If you like more heat increase the cayenne pepper.
And this fella makes some nice rubs

My wife "cleaned out" my spice and rub cabinet a few months ago. SO, I have to be careful trying to answer these types of questions, or I'll be in trouble again.
For most things (including veggies) I like Way Out West and M-3 from Savor Spices. My oldest daughter prefers Mo Rockin' Chicken. I also like Fine Swine and Bovine.
Then, I start to slide down that slippery slope... I do like Lawry's Seasoned Salt, and Old Bay for fish and chowders. And then.... well you get it...
So, when making a steak or burger on a typical night I am trying to use fresh ground pepper (but I do sneak some Grains of Paradise in there...) and kosher salt. I like to use a finishing salt and maybe a compound butter on my steak.
Yeah... I am doomed...
-
I absolutely love the PBC B&G rub on all things beef. For pork, I make my own rub which is a recipe I got from a local BBQ restaurant. Lamb I use Lawry's seasoned salt from the supermarket.

I'd like The Smoke to abstain from chiming in......he has a rub problem.
I like John Henry rubs. My family likes sweet rubs. And Savor Spices Mo Rockin chicken. It is mixed by elves living in a tree, and it contains dehydrated unicorn tears.
-
Oh yeah John Henry....
Dang, I need to put a filter on here to keep the rub / spice discussions away from me... I am going to be in BIG trouble!

If I could have only one it would be Jan's rub. Dee

Oakridge, savior spice, John Henry, dizzy pig, simply marvelous, miners mix, sweet Lou.

My all time favorite for chicken & pork is Penzey's Galena St. rub, one of late is Blues Hog Rub. For beef it might be Savor's Top Secret. Favorite all purpose seasoning is Penzey's sandwich sprinkle. Smokin Don
-
I like many rubs but if I would have to pick just one, I think it would be Smokin' Guns Hot.

I have used this rub for about 10 years and find that it is good on about anything I cook.

Sweet Lou's Roast Rub is my desert island rub....if I am stuck on a desert island, this is the one I would want..........
Roast rub is great with all meats, so is the Jamaican Jerk from Sweet Lou's. I also got Bayou BBQ, which is pretty good but more of an old bay/bbq rub. It goes good with chicken, pulled pork, and fish, but I really like using it with reheating left overs to change the flavor profile. Only thing I don't like it sometime there is too much celery seed.
For Beef, I just do 4oz salt, 2 oz black pepper, 2oz granulated garlic.
Everything else, Light brown sugar, salt, pepper, granulated garlic, lawry's seasoning salt, chili powder, paprika, dry mustard, ground clove. Mix together taste, and adjust.
-
There are so many great ones but if I could just have one it would be John Henry's Maple Pecan.
I like the Savor Line of rubs too. And Big Poppa's Smokers line.
-
I like to use slightly modified Memphis Dust on all my pork. I really like the some of the Weber rubs, roasted garlic, gourmet burger, and Chicago steak. Those are the ones I use the most.
-
To many good ones out there. ut would say Bad Byron's Butt Rub is at the top of my list along with Tee's Super Pig
Now Big Dick's Black label ain't bad either , still working on using the rest of them
-
I know Pappy let me have my one choice but I would like to mention Char-Broils All Purpose.......sadly Char-Broil discontinued their Pinch of Sizzle line of rubs and sauces......... :'(
-
Put me down for Memphis Dust - my wife will not eat anything with red pepper or hotter. :(
Also, love John Henry's Pecan rub - great on pork, imo.

My SWMBO thinks Taco Bell is spicy... kinda limits some options...

Other than my own rub, if I had to pick just one commercially available rub, then my choice would be very close to Old Dave's:
Smokin' Guns "Sweet Heat." I works on anything.

Oh my goodness. I am now posting here because I made the mistake and searched for "rubs". So, thank you to everyone for posting your favorite. Likewise, damn you all for my ever growing shopping list of rubs to try :-)
As for my pantry... I have things organized by meat product.
Chicken - Lawry's Rotisserie Chicken
Pork Shoulder/butt - Bad Byrons Butt Rub
Pork Ribs - currently mixing Brucken's rub with Salt Lick Dry rub at about a 3:1 ratio
Steak - I spoil my family by purchasing whole tenderloin and processing it into generously think Filets, so all that is needed here is good ol salt & Pepper
Baked Beans - Oakridge Habanero Death Dust
-
My latest favorite combo rub for bb ribs is Salt Lick and wrap over night, out of the fridge and a dusting of Big Butz Pig Pollen.
Salt Lick is heavy on the black pepper side, whereas the pig pollen brings on the paprika flavors

Salt lick rub is pretty good. Driving to San Antonio next week and will definitely be stopping at saltlick to try the BBQ

Brucken Food are a local company in Dayton, OH. The company started back in 1913 and recently changed ownership. Their steak seasoning is popular at many local steakhouses and some of the mustards they carry are outstanding.

My go to rub is Texas BBQ Rub, from texasbbqrub.com
I like the original, but they are all good. Reasonable too.
Just recently bought a variety from Savor Spices, but haven't tried yet.
-
I make my own simple rub (only five ingredients) that has served me well on brisket, ribs, and many other meats.
-
When I lived in Colorado Springs I used whatever Penzeys spices caught my eye, but now living near Kansas City the Costco sells Jacks Stack all purpose and meat rub both of which are sold in large jars for $8.
-
This is my go to rub...
1/2c Paprika
1/4c Brown Sugar
1/4c White Sugar
1/4c Granulated Garlic
2 tbs Onion Powder
2 tbs Sea or Kosher Salt
1 tbs Black Pepper
1 tbs Chili Powder
1 tbs Oregano
2 tsp Cayenne

I just took delivery today of five pound bags of each of the PBC rubs. I love them for chicken and pork, and I'm smoking one or the other every weekend. That should hold me for a while.
For tri-tip, I like this rub.
http://gfrealfood.com/2010/05/31/the-only-dry-rub-youll-ever-need/
It's sugar free, but makes a nice spice flavor profile for the steak.
*edit for inadvertent insult due spelling error.

I have experimented with a lot of rubs, but I have settled on just 2 rubs for everything. For brisket, ribs, chicken, turkey, and pork, I use Southside Market Original BBQ rub. For steaks and hamburgers, I use Southside Market's Smoked Steak rub. They come from Elgin, TX. That is the same rub I used for the briskets at all the Gatherings.
