Title: question for Sous vide Jedi masters
Post by: 1Bigg_ER on January 02, 2015, 11:04:20 PM
Should I cut the hole on the corner of the cover or dead center on the long side?

This is a 25qt igloo cooler.

I'm guessing you purchased an Anova?

If so, the container is a bit large.  Anova recommends a tank size of 4-5 gallons for their Precision cooker, and 5-6 gallons for the Anova One.

Although I'm no expert, I would guess that you might have uneven water temperatures if the vessel is too large, with the machine struggling to get it to, and to keep it up to temperature.  If you decide to go with the 6.25 gallon cooler, I would not put the opening in the corner, because I would guess the opposite side of the cooler might not be up to specs temperature-wise

Yes I bought the Anova original one.

From my research folks have been using coolers and "cambro" containers up to 36 qts. But I don't plan on filling it all the way. This one is 6 gallons.

Should work then - hadn't thought about the insulating properties of the cooler  ;)

I've only used my Anova's on stock pots and I find the water temps to be very consistent throughout the entire container. I doubt that location of the Anova would matter, the circulator distrbutes the water around the container very efficiently.

Bigg I don't think the location will matter that much for water temps because of the built-in circulation. However you do want to consider shapes and sizes if bagged items that you will be cooking in the cooler. So the short side might be a better choice.

Interesting, no wonder a lot of folks are putting the hole by the corner. The center of the short side makes sense. I'll have to move the handles though.

Thank you Jedi Masters.
I got everything ready, just waiting for Mr FedEx man.

You can control the circulation direction on the Anova as well. Gives you additional flexibility

I'm watching all this because one day soon I will order the Anova One.

DANG...when this S V thing came out a couple of years ago, I was thinking, "This is CRAZY!  This ain't REAL cookin' ".  Now, I'm seein' folks I look up to and esteem as REAL cooks, posting some great looking food.

I've been doin' the research and watchin' the videos and listening to y'all, and now I'm thinkin', I'm gettin' left behind - I need to catch up again."

Funny how you can let your "old ways" get in the way of trying something new - isn't it?

Wait until you try it out for yourself, you'll be amazed at the results you get from SV.

Pam, by aiming the circulator hole on the very bottom in a different direction. You do this by how you screw on the long metal tube thingy. It goes on more than one way.

Sweet! I am not a box keeper. But I made an exception for my Anova as they packed it so well

Same here, the box my first Anova came in has its home in one of my cabinets to store it in when not in use.  The container that my second Anova came in is more of a challenge to pack though, its a round container that splits in two with foam inserts to protect the unit.

Congratz - you won't be disappointed.  As Pappy said, save the box - it is perfect if you want safe storage and if you want to take it on the road

Thanks PZ for bringing up the road idea. I travel like crazy for work..
I actually found a smaller cooler that I take when traveling. It's a perfect fit.

That looks great! Your cooler looks like a good fit for the unit.  If you move to a larger cooler or water bath in general, and if you are still concerned with regulating temperature, you can always try adding in a simple aquarium bubbler for extra circulation in a larger bath.
