Gas Burner Info
« Reply #-1 on: July 17, 2014, 12:32:04 AM »
Jul 16 2014

A fellow BBQ enthusiast wrote me e-mail; and asks what I had under a skillet on my gas burner in one of my posts. It is a cast iron diffuser plate. It is about ΒΌ inch thick. Early using cast iron cook ware on the burner I had trouble keeping the heat down and not burning stuff. I found this diffuser plate on the net and it helped; so I use it all the time.

My favorite meal on the burner is a good shrimp boil. I recently bought a wok and will be using it with that in the future.

In the first pic you can see the burner which is at least 20 yrs. old. It is about as simple a burner as they make and should last a life time. One accessory I found necessary is the venturi brush you see to clean out spider webs after not using a while. If it gets plugged you will notice it by not being able to get a nice blue flame.

The second pic shows the bottom of the diffuser plate. You can see it is recessed.

The third pic shows the plate in place.

That thing is awesome.  I did a google search to try and find one, but nothing similar revealed itself to me.  I'm gonna keep looking.

X2 - I use my propane burner with a Discada (plough disc) and love it. I think the diffuser would be a great addition for heat control.

This isn't exactly the same, but this has a 10" diameter and should do the job:

If you have an Amazon Prime account, they have them for about $20 (which includes shipping).

I was wondering the same, though I knew it probably wasn't solid iron, and must have venting.
Using my disk, I went with a 12" wok ring to raise it up, however using any pots takes careful attention, so now Don, I am inspired to have one made custom !

I think I remember that I got the plate from Lehman's Hardware. Right now I can get to their home page bot not to look at the cook ware; says they are doing site maintenance. Back when I got it I was getting some cast iron cookware from them. https://www.lehmans.com/ Don

Not sure, I got it from a gas co. that said it was right. I would not want to go to less pressure since I need the high heat too. Don

Some high BTU natural gas burners are designed to work without regulation. They are sized for 8 inches WC which is the standard houseline pressure. If regulated at 4 inches they will not get those very high BTUs required for a Wok for example.

I just stumbled across a dispersion plate similar to the one you have. It comes on the volcano grill. Just wanted to get this post before I forget the name. Not sure if they will sell just the part yet.

I know you can get different regulators to use. My son in law has a double  tube burner that we need to bump up to a 40 PSI. Some of the 40s are adjustable so you can adjust the regulator up and down. A small valve does about the same but adjusting the reg lets you get a better flame at more levels.
