A Couple of Offset Mods
« Reply #-1 on: December 15, 2013, 06:43:29 PM »
Here are a couple of functional mods (actually add-ons) I did to my offset...

Added a drip lip between the channel and firebox (channel pic and firebox pic above).  Instead of having to weld it in there, it is a fitted double angle (hangs off the edge of the channel with a piece going up that acts as the lip/dam).  It is also removeable for cleaning this way.

Added an expanded metal charcoal grate on top of the log grate.  The grate is fine with just splits, but if I put down a charcoal bed the charcoal falls through too quickly.

My MacGyver solution for using my warmer box as a vertical charcoal smoker.  Drip pan in the bottom of the channel to act as an ash tray.  Expanded metal ring for a riser.  Expanded metal grate and another ring to hold the charcoal.  The ring on the bottom is a bit taller, so one or the other is used depending on how much charcoal is needed.  The grate is the one from on top of the log grate, and the drip pan is from the main chamber.  Making it modular (AKA MacGyver style) actually works better for multifunctioning the equipment (can also use the rings in my charcoal box for smaller loads).

Nice work Chris…. I am really liking your design. Any chance you will publish a drawing?

A drawing of what?  Just wondering if there is something missing from the original build thread.

Good additions! Makes perfect sense.

All right, let's see you put a half beef on that baby and fire it up!

I'll drive up and help you stoke the fire!

Merry Christmas.

I've got one last "test" cook to do.  I need to do something (I have half of a clod that I need an excuse to cook) just in the vertical with charcoal and chunks.  I've done some little things in the vertical while using the main cooker, and I've used it as a cold smoker (did some cheese and almonds at about 80 degrees) while using the main chamber and shutting down the damper between the vertical and main (plenty of smoke was rolling through but the temp stayed where I wanted it).

Not sure I could fit a side in it (I think I could get 7 packers in at once using both sides - 4 in the main and 3 in the vertical, but I would definitely have to use a charcoal assist in the vertical to keep everything hot enough), but seriously one of us needs to figure out a reason to travel up or down 35 and do some cooking.  Consider it a standing invitation Ed.  You have any reason to make it up to DFW?

The only reason that I would have to drive up 35 is to see you and work on this project.
