A serious contender?
« Reply #-1 on: May 29, 2014, 08:51:03 AM »
Y'all, check out this link - particularly the VIDEO DEMO and see if this qualifies as a contender with many standard features.

I hope to sell off some of my stock and get a Kamado...some of the fire pokin' I like to do, but close to set-it-and-forget-it.

That does look pretty cool. My brother has a BGE and swears by it. This appears to be a better value. Look forward to your review!

This looks pretty good Jack. I am still looking at the Primo. Almost bought one before the Grid Iron but
it is still on my radar.

Jack - I saw a similar unit at Academy Sports. But, I do not remember the price or details. Just remember that it seemed like a good deal as well.

Good price for a near Green Egg contender. It is ceramic like a BGE.

Look forward to your cooks with it Jack ;)

There may be an advantage to the Akorn - vs- BGE, besides weight. I have several friends that have the ceramic cookers - and they all seem to crack, or chip and "craze"....

The Akorn does use an industrial grade insulation, and porcelain clad interior lining...So - Durability should be good - it will not be as heavy - or fragile.

The reviews for the Akorn are pretty impressive. I do like the fact that it is not as fragile as a ceramic, and the price is excellent. Could be a contender when I finish "culling the herd."

I looked at the Char-Griller Akorn a while back. It looks like a pretty good outfit.  LA commented on liking his.  I will have to go over to HD and look at one of these.
Jaxon, Go ahead and get one so we can get the lowdown from you. Just get some nice steaks and have them about ready when Deb gets home from her day spa treatment your getting her. You know, The one that  coincides with your trip to HD.....
I'm really trying to hold out for a Rec-Tec. Hope to pick it up when I go to the get together this fall.

Jack - I saw a similar unit at Academy Sports. But, I do not remember the price or details. Just remember that it seemed like a good deal as well.

It was $499 and is pretty much a knock off of the large size BGE so all the accessories for the BGE should fit. I sold a lot of them and the folks that gave feedback loved them. The first year we got them they were green but they had to change the color to brown because of legal issues. I am not sure if Academy still sells them.
