Smokey Mtn Short Cook

I've had the 22.5 WSM (Fat Boy) for 7-8 years now and have been very happy with it.

In fact, so much so that when my son-in-law and I started competing, I convinced him we needed another one, even though he likes ceramics (Vision).

Well, at our last event I was having trouble keeping temp up on the one I was using for our rib entry (the brisket was on Fat Boy).  I was wondering if it was due, in part, to the smaller amount of fuel I was using since the ribs are such a short cook.

So, my questions is this: Would there be any benefit, when using small loads of fuel, to pick up charcoal ring for an 18.5 with the intent of concentrating the smaller load of fuel so that it's not a spread out?

Thanks for any and all input.

Yes, keeping less coal packed tighter helps keep the Minion burn in tact compared to letting the coal spread out..

Got the Charcoal Chamber for the 18.5 this afternoon.  I'll be lighting it up on Thursday.

Thanks for the idea, Sparky.  Just emptied out a big can of diced tomatoes (I'll figure out something to do with them) and looking forward to the rib cook tomorrow.

Place them in a blender, combine with vodka and Sriracha.  Add stalk of celery.  Ice.  Health food.

Ahhh, yes.  Instant breakfast!

Oh, and using the 18.5 charcoal ring worked out great!

Thanks, Bigg.

I've never tried that method before, but, will give it a try on another cook.
