I remember seeing a mod device that mounts over the chimney exhaust port on the inside of pellet grills to, as I remember, to even out the grill heat, wouldn't it also keep the smoke lower over the grates also ?and what was it again ?

It is called a down draft hood. This place has them for the Grid Iron, Traeger and Green Mountain grill. A little pricey but yes it does even out the heat and keeps the smoke lower over the grates. I have it on my grid iron. Here is the post on how it is mounted.
