Title: Tee EATS TEXAS....or - the Long and Winding Road Trip
Post by: teesquare on August 13, 2013, 11:44:10 PM
Finally!
Folks I have been trying to catch up on work. Take off 2 weeks...work for 2 weeks trying to catch up for taking off for 2 weeks... :-[ ;D This thread will have several parts - as there are a LOT of pics I want to post. And - I still need to call back and interview some of the pit masters that agreed to give us some time to talk about their story.

This trip was a BBQ pilgrimage of sorts. And a chance to see places I had not seen  - some for 25 - 30 years... My old home place, where I went to school...
I timed our departure from the driveway so that I could stop for lunch at the Loveless Cafe - just west of Nashville.

The one thing I can tell you about the Loveless is that it does not matter what you order...it will probably best the best you have eaten. It is really that good. And a great history - Look 'em up!
They have an online store and ship their hams, sausage, bacon and rubs anywhere. The smoke house you see above is a working shack that puts out some really good BBQ!
Next - I hammered it for Little Rock for the night, then drove into Dallas the next day. Timed it so that we had lunch at SMOKE.
I would have to say that Tim Byres the chef/owner has taken the elements of BBQ  and used them to create an incredible array of up-scale dining. Really amazing food! ( http://www.smokerestaurant.com )

This is there brisket plate. it comes with some sausage, fingerling potatoes and a thick slice of grilled sour dough bead

A hominy and cheese grits casserole. Crazy good...

Pulled pork plate...

They make their own pickles...and they are awesome! The pickled purple hull peas were really nice - and the "slaw" was very dill.

Kaye ordered this, and I was surprised...cabrito ( young goat) pit roasted, with goat's milk cajeta cheese, green apple salsa and thinly sliced radishes. Incredible...really unique and tasty.

I had to buy Tim's book....it may be the best of them out there - ever! It is not just pretty recipes and  chest thumping. THIS book goes into techniques, and how to build stuff!!! GET IT! It will become a favorite of yours I promise.

Then had to drive over to Grapevine - out near the DFW airport - and get checked....We stayed at the Gaylord Texan for 4 days  while we looked around DFW...and gorged on BBQ ;D

I can see why some people check in here to relax - and never go outside the hotel grounds. BTW - all of the below pics are inside the hotel.

Looks like my Aggies finally got their hands on BEVO! ;D
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-46.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-46.jpg.html)

So..I called up Doug ( EFGM) and Chris ( sliding billy) and we decided to go to the Pecan Lodge at the Dallas Farmer's Market. It was chosen as No.2 in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine - for brisket. We arrived 1:45 minutes before they opened...and we were 3rd in line!
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-53.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-53.jpg.html)
The view of the Dallas skyline while we wait to get in....
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-52.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-52.jpg.html)
We are in!
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-55.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-55.jpg.html)
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-56.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-56.jpg.html)
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-57.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-57.jpg.html)
The line continues to grow....
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-58.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-58.jpg.html)
I did not order this - but wish I had. They call it The Hot Mess - it is a salt crusted sweet potato stuffed with barbacoa ( shredded brisket) chipotle cream, green onions, cheese and crumbled bacon...POW!
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-60.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-60.jpg.html)
SO we ordered The Trough...and oh boy!
Chris described the BBQ at the Pecan Lodge as "decadent" - and I could not agree more! However - I could not eat this BBQ all of the time. It was so rich with smoke profile ( mesquite) heavy bark - and fatty juicy meat. Truly a special occasion BBQ joint!
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-63.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-63.jpg.html)

(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-65.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-65.jpg.html)
My vote for the best single item has to be the beef ribs...still dreaming about them ;D
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-67.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-67.jpg.html)

The next day - I met Chris in McKinney - north of DFW, at Hutchins BBQ. They also made the Top 50 BBQ joint in Texas. And what a great surprise this place was. Chris told me that it was his favorite - and, ...I was going to be critical. After all - we had just had the No.2 brisket the day before...

Chris and I got the all you can eat - and it is NOT a buffet. They cut what you want - when you want, fresh hot and juicy!
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-84.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-84.jpg.html)
Chris - about to lay waste to a massive amount of BBQ. This boy CAN EAT!!!! Of course - anyone that rises at 12:30 A.M. to run 5 miles every day - can probably put away a lot of groceries and not worry about it. Really - he does that! :D

So Saturday - I needed to work off some BBQ...I could not find a bull to climb on for a work out..but 'Ole Hoppy gave me a scare...I think I lasted for 4 seconds before he threw me off. He had a wicked low-inside spin move... :D
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-105.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-105.jpg.html)
Chris and his lovely Mrs. and 2 boys took me with them to the H. Ross Perot  Science and Tech. Museum. Fantastic place - really state of the art

Then we went for a "snack" at the Lockhart Smoke House. Named for the BBQ capitol of Texas - but located in Dallas

Dang, T, what a great adventure!  Love the pics, especially the ones that showcase the "Q"  ;)

Seriously, I think it great that you posted general pics of your vacation time - pictoral posts like this one are still among my favorite kind of post. (http://www.niscienceclasses.org/main/Smileys/fantasticsmileys/main_thumbsup.gif)

Sunday - we headed for Abilene, west of Ft. Worth about 2-1/2 hours.

If I could only sneak this into the van....

Or this...

These folks had some amazing stuff...

Stopped in Abilene and had lunch with my only remaining uncle. It was good BBQ.

Abilene sits at the extreme upper end of the Hill Country. As you head out of town southward - it begins to get nice and rolling as we head for a hotel in Fredricksburg
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-188.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-188.jpg.html)

A nice moon rise on the way to Fredricksburg just playing witht eh zoom on this new camera. Hand held shots, in a running car on teh side of the road, cars going by, moving the car around. Not bad....
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-445.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-445.jpg.html)

Another great series, T!

Gotta love that Q-assault vehicle, and even though I'm a John Deere guy, that Farmall rocker is really cool.  (http://www.niscienceclasses.org/main/Smileys/fantasticsmileys/main_thumbsup.gif)

Even though the pic didn't show it, it almost looks like Deere green next to that Farmall rocker

OHHHH MAMAAAA!!!! Now - I have to tell you, again - Kaye is not a big BBQ fan. *BUT* when she tasted Cooper's - she made some noise that harken back to that scene in "When Harry Met Sally"...Severl old ranchers looked at me, tipped their hats and winked...I had to calm Kaye down, and - MAN! was it embarrassing! Then - she whipped out the credit card - and said to the Mgr. "What is the largest picnic/family pack you can ship overnite - to my office tomorrow???" The guy's eye bugged out a little - and he whipped out a brochure...and several Franlins later...BBQ was on it's way to N.C. :D :D :D!!! I spent time the next day answering the phone and texts form our good folks at the office - they were blown away by the food!

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the pics Tim.  I had a great time hanging out with you for the 3 days you were in DFW.  I am going to the Babe's in Cedar Hill (the only other one that does ribs) on Saturday.  I need to remember to take a couple of pics there to compare to the Garland one we went to.

I thank every one of you for the kind words! I am glad you like the pics and my goofy commentary ( the story about Cooper's is true tho - I promise :D)
So...we are going up the toad to the Enchanted Rock - and this fellow was still shaking his tail, tho he had been just grazed by a car-
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-1013.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-1013.jpg.html)

So - I told you I am using a new camera on this trip - I did not carry a tripod, and I wanted t see how good the zoom/lens/image stabilization  work. This shot is taken at full-wide on the lens which is 25mm - f-stop on this lens is 2.8 for the full range of zoom.
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-2185.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-2185.jpg.html)
And here it is zoomed in at 600mm

Enchanted Rock is the 2nd largest exposed mass of granite in N. America. It is an interesting color too.

Do you see the rock climbers?

The sun was getting low on the horizon when we left Enchanted Rock. Best time of day to watch for wildlife. Sorry this one is so fuzzy - I barely saw these guys while driving @ about 60 mph. Look closely, and you can see the antlers on the buck. In less than 8 miles we saw 20-30 deer, a chaparral ( road runner ), wild feral hog, rattlesnake quail, dove, and the ubiquitous Texas Longhorn.

Prickly Pears were a favorite treat for me as a kid. If you live where you can get some - you you know what I mean. A little lime juice squeezed on them....

Those little old Texas towns really have been kept up and look good. They bring back memories of a time gone by.

San Antonio! Most noted for the Alamo, and the Riverwalk. And - my wife had not been to San Antone - and it had been so long since I had - we just went "tourist".
So we hit The Market first- The Market is a collection of shops that are owned or run by folks from Mexico ( for the most part - tho I do not know if this is still completely true)

Hot...tired...Let's head for the Menger Hotel.

The Menger opened it's doors to travelers and diners in 1859. (I discovered that  the jokes about the ghosts moaning in the rooms mostly come form the moaning of the plumbing - I think it is original... :D)
It is a "Grand" hotel in every sense of the word. It is easy to imagine the rich and famous of by gone era such as Theodore Roosevelt, Sam Houston, Babe Ruth - and my favorite...Mae West ;)... soaking up the luxury that the Menger offered them. Surprising ly - the hotel restaurant was top notch. Most are not, but the food at the Menger was not over the top in price - tho it was in quality!

The rooms were on the small side - but, well kept. And - you only sleep in your room after all. So, let's explore the hotel...

So... the Mrs. drags me out of bed  - Anxious to see the Alamo ;D. It is nice that the Menger is about 100 yards from it. THen across the street from Alamo Plaza, you can enter the Riverwalk.
The real historical significance of the Alamo surpasses any movie made in Hollywood ( tho you can't beat John Wayne's movie about it ;D) so we went to the I-Max theater which is located immediately out the back door of the Menger lobby. I mean less than 50 paces! They show a documentary style film about the Alamo that was originally a PBS broadcast I think. A great primer...Then-

This plan view of the entire compound shows you the extent of what "The Alamo" was when the battle took place. Notice the small bog in the upper right corner? THAT is the the building that we associate with the Battle of the the Alamo. It is the Mission.
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/file-1784.jpg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/file-1784.jpg.html)
Look at the weird crosswalk. It has one "leg" that runs parallel with the street. That is because it is not a crosswalk. It is a marker showing where the southwest corner of the entire Alamo compound walls were. Look across the street at the old knee high rock wall. THAT is the original corner of the wall surrounding the compound. To the right of the rock wall - there are steps leading down to the Riverwalk.

I am standing in that southwest corner of the rock wall - looking back at the Alamo mission building. look at how far it is. It was a significant sized structure - huh?

The Riverwalk, and boat ride were next on the agenda. If you have not been to San Antonio and enjoyed the Riverwalk area - you are missing out on what maybe America's smaller - but very enjoyable version of Venice. Highly recommended. Very tropical, lots fountains and flowing water, many good places to eat and drink 8)....

Okay...hot, tired..THIRSTY.... ;) Where to go? We step off the boat and POW! look at this sign! A siren song, that drug me up some long stators...tot eh FIRST bar to open - the very day that Prohibition ended! And they still make the the same old "speak-easy" cocktails. And...they also have a tequila menu with more than 40 different tequilas on it :P.

Title: Re: Tee EATS TEXAS....or - the Long and Winding Road Trip
Post by: teesquare on August 14, 2013, 12:53:06 PM
After a pleasant conversation with the constabulary in the village of Martinale - which ended in a sizable contribution to their policeman's retirement fund.... :-[ ;D...We made it to Lockhart! A town of approx. 12,000 po. - yet home to 4 LARGE and well known (some say the best) BBQ joints in Texas. Smitty's, Blacks, Kreuz', and the Chisolm Trail. We ate at Smitty's, snacked at Kreuz' and stopped in Blacks. I was running late - so missed Chisolm Trail... next time tho... ;)
The old court house is getting a facelift. A beautiful building - even tho the scaffolding is in our way -

Now - Kreuz's and Smitty's are the same family - as I understand it, when the "old man" died - the kids split - one kept the old location, but the other got the family name of the business ( Kreuz ) and went across town and built this behemoth of a place. The old location reverted to the name Smitty's.
At Kreuz - they have a larger menu - and they make a kraut that has bits of BBQ meat in it - and it is GREAT!

There is a recently built tollway/expressway in Texas... you amy have heard about itIt has eased the traffic back ups when folks need to get from San Antonio to Austin an that area...The speed limit is...Funny thing/smart thing about tollways in Texas - they have no toll booths to slow you down. ( After all the objective IS to keep traffic moving - right?) The have high speed cameras that take a picture of your lacense plate and mail you your toll fees. Slick. Efficient. Texan. ;)

And - I wanted to stop at a Buckee's but forgot and ran out of time...Anyone know some info on them? I saw a few of them - and they look like they must be the largest "truckstop" and convenience store - but not for trucks...for auto travelers. I mean - the building looks like it is the size of a Wal-Mart!

Went thru Kilgore, to show the Mrs. what living in the oil patch was like. We stopped at the Oil and Gas Museum. The name made her nervous, but I quickly explained not THAT kind of gas...She thought my "issue" was a result of being from Texas - and they had built a museum honoring my gastonomic marvel  :D ??? ::).....

This is what the main street in town looked like during the boom. The population went form 800 to 8000 OVERNITE - as soon as the announcement of the oil find hit the papers!

t2, thanks for the great photo essay. It made me feel like I was there with ya'll. I do know a bit about Buc-ees. You should like this. They were started by a graduate of Texas A&M (who is now a multimillionaire) and they are famous for two things.....#1 and #2. Their restrooms are on the same scale as the Shoji Tabuchi Theater in Branson. MO. Now they don't have the fireplace, grand piano, the billiard table, or the 24K gold plated faucets and toilet hardware, but they have some mighty fancy restrooms with a lot of modern plumping. Not only can you buy pretty cheap gas there,  you can buy everything from kolaches to deer blinds to bbq grills and everything in between. They are great rest stops for weary travelers and very interesting to roam around and look at all the Texas souvenir stuff. Did I mention that they were founded by an Aggie?

I almost forgot...One of my favorite souvenirs from the trip....

This was the most famous quote from Davy Crockett - when after losing re-election as a Senator from Tenn. he said:

(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq1/teesquare1/TX%202013/20130814_120430.jpeg) (http://s428.photobucket.com/user/teesquare1/media/TX%202013/20130814_120430.jpeg.html)

Of course - I don't really feel that way at all. But...I am going back to Texas soon....  ;) ;D
