Title: ROAD TRIP
Post by: IR2dum on January 21, 2014, 12:09:38 PM
Hey, guys and gals of the bbq universe, I'm about to start on a little road trip all by myself plus 2700 of my closest friends. I will be out of pocket for about a month or so. Just didn't want Dee to worry about me. You know how he gets when somebody disappears for any length of time. I'm not real sure how much internet access there will be, but I will try to connect every now and again (if I can) whenever there is a little down time. I should be back by the end of next month for about a week and then going back for another 10 days or so in the middle of March for another round of fun working in the cold weather. Can't wait to get this over with. I will tell y'all how much fun it was when I get back. I will miss everybody, but I'll be thinking about all the good food that keeps showing up on this site and that should keep me going throughout this ordeal. Keep the fires burning and adios for a while.

Have a good trip and be safe. It doesn't sound if this is strictly a pleasure trip, but have fun.

Hey Ken, you are so right. This won't be much fun at all working 20 hour days almost every day. It never gets easier. The safety is what I am a little concerned about.

Have a good trip and be safe. It doesn't sound if this is strictly a pleasure trip, but have fun.

Mike, actually Fox is doing the superbowl this year. I get to do it next year. I'm gonna try to be safe. Maybe Tommy's son can loan me his bulletproof vest for a while.

Ken, I would trust you with my life. Actually, we are taking our own security force, but it is still not clear if they will be allowed to carry weapons or not and I'm thinking probably not..

I don't like black widows; however, I am looking for one of those Russian mail-order brides that I can bring back and resell here in the states. As they say, buy cheap and sell high.

I seem to remember IR2dum telling us at the Fall Gathering that he was so senior he could pretty much pick and choose the events he worked. He told me last week he wasn't going to be able to work the Pro Bowl because he "had" to do the cold weather gig. I don't know whether he voluntarily gave up a winter break in Hawaii for Olympic glory but if he did, it pretty much explains his screen name. If not, maybe he should change it from "IR2dum" to "Unlucky Bubba."

Be safe and (try to) stay warm, Bubba.

Yep, you will be earning your keep!

Turtle, apparently seniority doesn't mean much when you are as important as me (cough, cough....that was hard to type). Ok, back to reality. I didn't really have a choice because the powers that be decided to farm out the ProBowl to an independent production company that is all ready on the island. Something about time constraints of getting that equipment we would have used to Russia on time. If I would have had a choice, I would have been basking on a recliner in the warm trade winds of the islands sipping libations with my reptilia friend as we listen to Jimmy Buffet while smoking some meat in his new PBC. I'll try to stay warm.

Albert, they pretty much convinced me that I will never see a stewardess on that plane....and they also said that if I wanted some peanuts for snacks or a drink, I better bring them with me. I'm stocked up.

I heard that you were picking up Dee and Jaxon and flying to Houston for a bbq tour with CaptJack and myself. Make that happen before it gets too hot (late April or May would be good).

See you soon.

Shoot, I don't see why all those concern about  the two seater toilets over there.  When I went into the Army the barracks had about 12 or so lined up against the wall and folks just carried on conversations as if nothing was different.  Of course, that was an improvement for some of us. It was only 9 years earlier that I was going on a two seater out in the back yard.  Which was better than the Turtle who had come straight from their two seater to the barracks. ;)  Dee

I just got off the phone with Don and he's in Connetticut(-1 sp) and it's wheels  up this afternoon.  He ain't really looking forward to this.  He'll be there until around the end of Feb and then back here for a couple of weeks before going back over to the paraolympics in March.  He said they had already shipped 330 30' containers of stuff over and have a bunch of big airplane loads go go. If  you have ever been involved in logistics you can imagine what it must be like being on the ground receiving  all this stuff from everywhere in the world and moving it to where it's supposed to go.  NBC takes everything with them--food, water, clothing, toilet articles et al---and never buys anything in the host country.  Smart move.

Pray for Don that everything will go well for him and he will return safely to us.

Dee

Hey, guys and gals, guess who's back. Got back to Houston early this morning. I'm really happy to be home and finished with the traveling circus. Just checking in with everybody to see if everyone behaved while I was away. I'm going to be sleeping for the next couple of days just to catch up on my sleep schedule. I really missed checking in with y'all from Russia, but I'm glad to be back home. Thanks for all the advice and well wishes. It is greatly appreciated.

Welcome back can't wait to see some photos  ;D

Sorry, Don. I didn't take a single photo. First, I didn't take a camera and second, I didn't turn on my phone because of malware that suspiciously appears on your phone when you activate in country. I did, however, send back over 5,539 hours of video for your viewing pleasure. Hope that you got to see a little of it. I spent most of my time at the Sanki Sliding Center up in the mountain cluster. Got to ride the train up there and back everyday (about 25 miles). Most of my friends and I stayed at The Radisson Blu Resort and Spa which is only about 3 blocks from Olympic village down in Adler. A very nice hotel. When you walked around the grounds of the resort, you might think you were in Florida with all the palm trees and tropical landscaping. All in all, I had a good experience with the Russian culture. Didn't see any frantic late construction or unfinished hotel rooms or missing door handles or anything that we were lead to believe. It seems that the only people that had trouble with their accomodations were the print media, but you have to know by now that those guys make up the words they write to make the story fit their ideologies. I didn't try any local Russian food because all of our food was shipped from home. We even had a makeshift McDonald's that went with us. Love me an Egg McMuffin and hash brown in the morning (especially when it is all-you-can-eat and free). I didn't have a language problem because we had an interpreter that sat between the director and me and did all the communication between my production van and the IBC (International Broadcast Center). OK, enough for a while. If I think of anything interesting, I'll let y'all know and if anybody wants to know anything real specific, just PM me. As someone once said, thanks for listening. Oh, by the way, I did see Vladimir Putin walking into the Laura Bi-athalon Stadium one day last week. That was the day that the Russians finished Gold, Silver, and Bronze in the para-cross country. He ignored me completely and we are still not on a first name basis or even a nickname basis. I was going to call him Vlad and he was going to call me 2DUM. Oh, well. Second, by the way. Russian mail order brides are not as easy to get or as pretty or as cheap as those magazines state.
