Take the time to enjoy!
« Reply #-1 on: September 10, 2014, 11:36:42 AM »
Sep 10 2014

This summer trying to get projects done and enjoying my cooking hobby I didn’t take enough time to smell the roses! Usually through the summer I take a lot of flower, bird and butterfly photos. I did not get ant butterfly photos but the other day I did take the time to get a few hummingbird photos.

I have been feeding the ruby throated hummingbirds every summer for at least 30 years. They are enjoyable to watch. In early spring the males show up first trying to find an area to claim. The one that finally has his area claimed will mate with two or three females. He will tolerate these females but chase all others from his area.

Near the end of Aug. there will be more activity as transients stop to feed on their way back south for the winter. The other day I did set out for a couple of hours and get some shots of a male and a female. I need good sunlight with my camera and lens. I shot these mid –morning, not the best photos since I do better in mid-afternoon sunlight. In the one of the male you will note his ruby throat looks dark, when the sun reflects just right it will be a brilliant red. Take the time to enjoy!

Very nice,  Don!  Our hummers are almost all gone now. Just a few stragglers left as we head into cold weather

I haven't seen any lately but mine sit on the wires above my trumpet vine.  I'm figuring they are resting.  Pam    .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

Nice pics. I went to the Seattle Audubon website and they said to feed year round as our Annie hummingbirds don't migrate. I will have to figure out a way to heat the feeder from freezing I guess...
