If you note in the link the word illusion! I think rather than changing colors it is the way the light reflects from the feathers. My Ruby throated ones are the same way and will be from black to deep red in throat color. Don

Agree completely. The iridescence is what cause the feathers to appear to change colors. If you have ever seen an indigo bunting in full sunlight then watch the same bird go into shadows you would swear you were looking at two different birds altogether. Birding, hunting, fishing and cooking are the main passions in my life (in no particular order) so posts like this always grab my attention.
