Title: Need Recommendations On a Quality Meat Thermometer
Post by: nukeofficer on March 14, 2017, 01:36:19 AM
Ok everyone, I love this forum and trust the suggestions of my fellow grilling folks. I'm looking for recommendations on a quality meat thermometer?

Thank you in advance!

Look no further than Thermapen made by ThermoWorks. Great products, lab quality,  and fabulous customer service.

Definitely agree with this! The best there is in my opinion. If you are also looking for a grill thermometer then go with the ThermoWorks Smoke. Best combo there is!

A Thermapen is a handy tool to have around, both for BBQ and in the kitchen for checking doneness levels of stuff.  It'll cost you around $70-80 if you wait for one of their frequent sales.  The "pop" is only about $30 and pretty handy, too.

Thermoworks. I do the legion bbq's and use it exclusively. People watching are amazed at how fast it is.
When you are cooking 200 chicken breasts with 3 barbeques going, you need speed.

I have a Thermoworks Chef Alarm but going to upgrade to the Smoke. That is the Cats Meow from what I've read.

LOL. Of course the flame one is fastest, and the best.
Do love my smoke though, so easy to use.

If you're looking for another worthy option that's more cost effective, try this:  Lavatools, Javelin Digital Instant Read Thermometer (https://www.amazon.com/Lavatools-PT12-Javelin-Thermometer-Chipotle/dp/B00GRFHXVQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489509387&sr=8-1&keywords=Lavatools+Javelin)

After much research I got one last year from Amazon using a gift card I got for my birthday.

After using it for nearly a year, I can tell you this is NOT some cheap feeling unit.  It's a solidly built, NSF certified thermometer with a Lifetime warranty, and it performs quickly and accurately!   Mine usually stabilizes within 3 - 4 seconds as advertised.

This independent test ranks the Javelin right behind Thermoworks "Thermanpen" & "ThermaPop" thermometers:  http://www.toptenreviews.com/home/kitchen/best-meat-thermometers/

Pro's/Con's
> It is very fast and accurate, and has the "needle tip" style probe.
> The main complaint you will see about Javelin is that their customer support is by email only.
> It has a shorter overall length compared to the Thermapen.  This alone has pro's & con's, but has not been a problem for me. I actually like the smaller size as it fits in my shirt pocket better.
> The Javelin also has a magnet so it sticks to my grill. A very handy little feature.

Overall, I am happy enough that I would not hesitate to buy a second one if needed.

They also now have a newer model with a back-lit LCD display for about $50.

Hope this helps!

Another vote for  Thermoworks.  I have a smoke and a few of the Thermopops   and haven't had any issues.
