Title: Lowering Temps in the SRG
Post by: dogchili94 on August 17, 2017, 10:27:27 AM
Howdy, new member to the forum.  Just purchased a SRG and tried a butt this past weekend.  With the lid closed, on low, I was running 450 to 475.  Opening the lid, I could get down to 325 or so.  This was with a straight out of the box Thermpro TP12.

Any suggestions for lowering the temps?

I did a 7.5# butt in about 5 hours (3 hours lid closed, 1 hour open, 1 hour closed again)

Sorry for the late reply...

First off, were you cooking on LOW setting?   Remember, infrared is not your typical cooker so heat range will run high yet not dry out meat like other cookers.

When I cook butts which I have 136 of them under my belt I cook on LOW setting and sometimes kick it to MED/LOW if it's a windy.

Now cooking lid up is fine but you will not get any smoke to the meat,  BUT  if you crack the lid open about 1 to 2 In's then you can keep the smoke in yet let out some of the heat your worried about.   Why in Sam hill they placed vents on the side of the lid instead of the top is beyound me but they did.  I myself blocked those vent and cut a 4 in breather hole in the top of the lid to let out excess heat let keeps the smoke in

At work but if you need more info ask

Tommy is certainly the expert on this subject, but it has been my experience that if you want to cook something "low & slow", the SRG is not the best vehicle for the job.
I love my SRG, but I also have a hard time getting it to cook at a low temp.

Am I wrong Tommy :-\ :-\

No sir you are correct, the SRG is not a low and slow cooker but it can be used to to do some great cooks  ;)

If one wants to modify their unit it can do more but out of the box Roget you are spot on..

Thanks for the response.  Yep, was on high for about 15 minutes to get the smoke started and then as low as it would go the rest of the way.

I will try cracking the lid until I get brave enough to cut a hole in the top.

Looking forward to continuing to learn more about the SRG.

That is exactly what I do if I am using smoke.
Then after the smoke time is done I open the lid to lower the temp.
