Title: Looking to get a pressure cooker
Post by: mikeharold on December 17, 2017, 11:16:49 AM
The wife and I have been talking about, but never pulled the trigger, on getting an electric pressure cooker for a while. She got a nice xmas bonus and said she wants to get a pressure cooker with part of it. So my question to everyone is what would you suggest? What do you consider to be the best and what features do you like and should we be looking at? Thanks!

Instant Pot. ONLY Instant Pot.....

I am usually not a "brand" person - but in this case there are some reasons I believe are valid in my brand support:

1.  All Stainless - not "teflon" coated inner pot. In fact the top is stainless as well.

2. the size of the support groups/recipes/reputation for standing behind their product.

3. actual cookbooks based on the Instant Pot performance factors - meaning, known wattage of the heating element influencing the cook times and temps.

I did a big batch of Anasazi beans with ham last nite. I pushed the button for chili/beans - set it for 120 minutes. They were cooked perfectly - and you would have thought they were cooked slowly all day on a stove top.

We "had" the Power XL pressure cooker until Wendy set it on our hot electric range.

Which is OK, because now we can get the Instant Pot.

I agree 100%. Loved my Instant Pot so much I bought a second one for my RV. The ones I own are described below:

I recommend getting the Instant Pot DUO60 6 Qt 7-in-1 Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Steamer, Sauté, Yogurt Maker and Warmer.

Tee, I had already looked there and if you notice, they are used units.

So, funny how timing and the universe work sometimes! Amazon just dropped a package off and it was from my mom to my wife. It's gift wrapped but I looked at the receipt and it's a COSORI 6q 8 in one. Anyone have any experience? Seems to be well reviewed and looks like a decent unit.

https://www.amazon.com/COSORI-Premium-Programmable-Multi-Cooker-Pressure/dp/B07414FZLW/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1513540030&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=pressure+cooker&psc=1

Been kicking around an air fryer as well, maybe we'll look at one of those instead!

Looks like I did not send you the link I thought I did....

Try this one. Instant Pot is the vendor. New.

https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Pot-Multi-Use-Programmable-separately/dp/B074T7QQC6/ref=sr_1_60?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1513541422&sr=1-60&keywords=instant+pot

FWIW - because these are all stainless - I would not be afraid of buying a used one if it were cheap enough. Bleach is cheap too... ;) ;D
My 8 qt. I got from the Amazon return store local to me. for $40 bucks. Cleaned it - sent the lid and the pot thru the dishwater on highest heat settings....Good as new.

Yet another recommendation for the Instant Pot.  I purchased the DUO60 back in July 2016 and have sent four others as gifts to family since then.  It's pretty bulletproof and makes some of the best soups I've ever had.  Being able to make a rich, hearty Senate Bean Soup from dry Great Northerns in an hour is freakin' awesome.  Beef stew is super simple, though the 8qt. version that's out now would be the one I'd go with.

I've just started experimenting with using it to make stock from scratch; I've been dabbing with making lamb stock but I really need to get the bigger Instant Pot.  Chicken stock made this way is better than Kitchen Basics by big margin ... and I'm a fan of the Kitchen Basics line.

Here is a lengthy video regarding the IP 6 and 8 quart models. Just to give one an idea of the on counter size of the units.  I am waiting for my Cuisinart pressure cooker to die so I can get the 8 qt.   For large cooks I use a large Kuhn Rikon stove top.

What they said.

Instant Pot is such a no-brainer even an Aggie can get it right.

I have a Faberware Pressure Cooker, and thought that it was OK until I read about the Instant Pot.  There was an interesting New York Times article "How a Cooker became conqueror" by Kevin Roose about the Canadian founder Robert Wang.  His company was a "Startup", and his key to success was Amazon.  Now I am faced with trying to justify another cooking device.
