Title: Decorated 2 Star
Post by: Michigan0626 on May 18, 2018, 07:51:09 AM
Catch the double entendre?

I want to decorate my 2 Star. I want to give it the Medal of BBQ, and I want to face paint it. Has anyone put a design on the front lid? I want to put a large Marine Corps design on the front.  First I thought of throwing on a large magnet, but I don't see that holding up to searing heat levels. Maybe a stencil and some high heat spray paint. Could use some ideas.

It is the commanding general of 1st BBQ Division, 2nd Secret Recipe Battalion; and I'm just SGT Smoke doing the menial grunt work.

Side note- here are some bbq vinyl stickers with IT reminders I found looking for something to go on my MAK hood. Fully how they label 160 as burnt for beef instead of well done.  :D

Instead of a high heat overlay/decal, would a steel cutout attached with something like a wingnut or other means drilled through the lid be a better idea?

Drilling  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???  Not sure if I would but that's me, not that it would hurt the grill just hate putting a hole in anything you know (unless modifing a grill ;);) )

But, it would be sealed and the unit is stainless steel so it wouldn't rust or hurt the lid + the look would be

I'd go with the third  one the USMC one it fits and your a proud Marine like you should be

Just saying cause you have a 2 star Gen but Sgt strips may not fit the grill you know (just my 2 cent ) plus folks that don't understand military insignia may not think Marine

Those are very nice. You could mount the with stainless electronic board standoffs and it would look really nice. https://www.alliedelec.com/raf-4534-632-ss/70006560/?mkwid=sEqbbH9wt&pcrid=30980760979&gclid=CjwKCAjw8_nXBRAiEiwAXWe2ySArhgsrRus2bk-r1mNq6h22gxVbZntuyyVoS_flVQUY2xurRPJZ_hoCQyQQAvD_BwE

If you mounted using these it would make the sign standoff the lid surface a half inch or so. It would add some dimension to the finished look and keep a little heat off you sign. I put some on a plate here so you could see them mounted. By coincidence you can see them mounted between the plate and electronic board as well.

Your speaking my language, SemperFi Marine!

The hood is too hot for any glued decals, magnets will not stick to the real stainless that we make the grills from. You could find a reverse stencil and tape it to the hood the spray in the logo that way, doubt spray paint would adhere to the stainless very well although I have never tried it.

We stenciled a grill hood for John Petrucci (the guitarist from Dream Theater) once using a bead blaster with a stencil taped to the hood. Turned out really cool but it was a royal pain to keep it from blowing off.

Or I could cut an EGA (he knows what this is) out of stainless on the laser, roll it to match the curve of the 2 Star and send it to you if you want :)

That would be amazing.  How much would you charge to cut and bend a piece one for me?

Would it be difficult trying to find someone that could paint/powder coat it with something that could stand up to the temperatures?

Just thinking out loud... but I wonder how it would look cut from the same aluminized steel (used on the lower body of the 2 Star) that is then finished with a high temp black powder coat.  Sure would "pop" with the stainless contrast of the lid.  And much like stainless, aluminized steel will not rust :)
