I've been doing this version of an old Martha Stewart recipe for about 15 years now - always a hit for those that like eggnog.
Ingredients:
- 6 eggs
- 3/4 cup baker's sugar
- 1 pint heavy cream
- 1 pint Half-n-Half
- 1 quart milk
- 2 cups bourbon
- 1 cup brandy
- 1/2 cup rum
Instructions:
- Separate the eggs
- Beat yolks until thick and pale yellow, then gradually add the sugar until fully incorporated
- Whisk in the milk, Half-n-Half, and 1/4 of the heavy cream, and all the spirits
- Just before serving, beat the egg whites until stiff, then fold into the eggnog base
- Beat the remaining heavy cream to stiff peaks, and also fold into the eggnog
- Keep chilled, and be sure your guests remain for the night

Yum! I love Egg Nog. Separating the eggs like that & beating the egg whites & whipping the cream sounds like a great way to keep it thick after adding all the spirits.

Great sounding recipe….but-no sprinkle of nutmeg, cinnamon or cloves? I guess we can add that as desired without ruining it?

Yes indeed. Stays thick for at least a couple of days because of the beaten whites and heavy cream floating to the top. Just need to stir before serving. If you like a thick eggnog, this is the best I've personally ever had

Goodness yes! My wife always adds nutmeg, but I rarely do. I always maintain that precise measurement and exact ingredients are necessary mostly for baked goods, but when it comes to seasonings, everyone has their own taste buds

When I lived in France I asked my friend Jean-Pierre if they had eggnog in France..he thought a minute and then said "I know the egg..but I don't know the nog"..ha....I love even store bought nog with a generous amount of Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum and a dash of cinnamon sugar on top...

I printed this out so I can make sure to pick up all the ingredients on the way home from work-- I've already got my fiance drooling, just describing it to him!

Very, very close to the way my mom made it for many years! She would fret over getting everything JUST right before she put it all together. Yes, she did sprinkle nutmeg on the surface of each cup. She's been gone 17+ yrs, she didn't make it for many years, and even though I have the recipe, I've NEVER made it. BUT, remember it was very good.

Thanks again for this pz, me and my love made some this weekend to celebrate having the kiddo out of the house for a few days... TOP NOTCH recipe!!! Was a lot smoother than I thought it might be as I was measuring out the bourbon. Strong, but wasn't overwhelming. James said to tell you "Thank you" and that you're a genius. :) Made for a perfect cozy date night at home with a movie. :)
And I had totally forgotten until I was making it.... I have had ONE other home-made eggnog recipe... It was a non-boozy version, when I was about 7 years old. Dad whipped some up, and thought he would make it "healthy" by adding half a bottle of cod liver oil to the mix. ???
Just to be stubborn and prove that it wasn't as awful as we were all making it out to be, he drank the whole batch himself. :o I don't think that even with this much 'fortification' it would have cancelled out that fish taste!!!! :) No wonder I'd blocked that out! :)
(He was the also of the mindset that cod liver oil pills wouldn't deliver the same health benefits as liquid, and would make us take a big tablespoon of it each morning before school. I still remember arguing that I didn't care HOW bloody shiny it would make my hair-- burping up fish oil all day was just NOT WORTH IT!) :)
This version washed away all of those childhood traumas. ;) Hehehe

I'm so glad you and James liked it, Kat; you're so correct in that it is as smooth as silk despite the relatively large quantity of spirit. That's why I recommend this only for those that are not driving, and is one of the main reasons we insist our guests spend the night if we are serving this "dessert" ;D
I'm also glad that it washed away the fish oil trauma - makes me shiver just to think of it ;D
