Hackberry Smoked Pork Chop
« Reply #-1 on: May 20, 2016, 09:14:58 AM »
Acquired some hackberry wood & thought I'd try it.
As always when trying something new I started small & with something cheap.
A 14 oz center cut bone in pork chop, looks like a porterhouse.
Seasoned with a prize winning steak rub a friend gave me.
Smoked for 30 minutes indirect & a quick sear.
Served with fries & sweet corn.
Hackberry is fine, probably side by side we'd never know if wasn't pecan.
The rub was FANTASTIC, first time I tried it going on a steak soon.

Left to right pecan , hackberry & oak

The chop looks mighty fine but I had to google Hackberry as I am unfamiliar with it.
"Also known as the nettletree, sugarberry, beaverwood", and netletree is what I know it as.

Interesting,  don't think any of that exists naturally here in the upper Midwest.

We have a lot of hackberry trees in Texas. We consider them a junk or waste tree. They are not that aesthetic. There should be a lot of hackberry wood out there because people don't want them on their property and cut them down, but I never heard of anybody using the wood for smoking. LA, maybe you're on to something. I definitely know that you're a trend setter.

I thought hackberry only existed in Alabama. It is a nuisance here, sure never thought about using it to cook.

Hackberry is a fruit tree, the berries are edible, just tiny.

Just like quality college football programs....Hackberry trees exist elsewhere Ken.... :D :D :D
Actually - we had a huge one in our yard that my grandfather and I built a treehouse in. And the berries were a treat...unless you had a white car and parked under the tree, because the birds could "recycle" the berries into "purple rain" that could make a car look like it had been victimized by teenage hooligans with paintball guns.... ;D
