Funny how life works.
« Reply #-1 on: August 01, 2018, 01:27:17 PM »
When I started my bbq business I bought mak 1 star #63 & #69.  I sold #69 to Robb.  Sold #63 to my neighbor.  Yesterday I was outside and said howdy to my neighbor.  I asked how my old girl (#63) was doing.  He said she wasn't working for a long time.  I asked if I could take a look at her.  He said no problem.  Wheeled her home.  She was really, really filthy.  Grease in her belly.  She was a mess.  The panel on the outside was on backwards so she couldn't get air.  Two wires were disconnected from the control panel.  Put her back together and took the next 3 hours cleaning her up.  Put in some fresh pellets and fired her up.  Set to smoke for 1 hour and the pellet boss and my maverick both read between 165-180 for the entire hour.  Cool.  Upped the temp to 250. Another hour.  240-255.  Super cool.  So I put some spam on her for lunch (i cleaned her up I might as well cook something on her).  Love smoked spam with crackers.  Shut her down and let her cool off.  Called my neighbor and she she was all better and I was bringing her back.  He meet me outside and told me the he bought a traeger timberline and didn't need the mak.  Did I want it for $400 and he has the new flash fire the he didn't put in yet.  I had a sheepish smile on my face and said, ok.  If you don't need her I can help ya out (he is moving to Florida in a month).  Bam, I went to the bank and Shazam.  She mind again.  I called up to mak and ordered a new pellet boss, inside temp probe and M-4  probe.  I'm so damn happy.

Clean up some.

Let's fire the old girl up.  I moved pellets out of the way to make sure the arriver was turning.  It was.

How cool is this.

Always perfect.  Top and bottom shelf probed right in the middle of the grate.

I cleaned her up so I'm going to cook on her.

So, meet my new/old smoker.  I love her.  This one smoker has smoked over 300 racks of ribs.  What now.  Time to go to Costco.

Happy for you Gus!  Based on my experience with ole #69, I know that those old MAK's (just like all MAK's) are built to last for the loooong haul... not only that, but they are smoking machines!  Only reason I sold #69 was to buy a brand new shiny 2 Star... lol :)  But as far as pure smoking/roasting ability, nothing (IMO) beats the 1 Star!!
