Title: Need help / Suggestions on pellet grill cooking in the winter
Post by: nukeofficer on September 16, 2017, 01:01:21 PM
Ok fellow grillers, I bought a Pit Boss pellet grill this past spring and I love it! I live in Eastern Oregon and want to continue using my Boss during the cooler months. We get temps as low as 0 degrees sometimes. Mostly though in the low teens to upper 20s.
Unfortunately Pitt Boss does not make an Insulated blanket for their grills so I have to improvise. Any suggestions or tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance

Get yourself a couple cheap welding blankets, they work great.   I use them on my pellet grills here in Central IL.  Similar winters to yours.

Great idea. Do they come in different sizes?

Yep.   I've used some from Harbor Freight, or order from an Amazon store.   You don't need anything fancy or expensive.

I think mine were 6x6.   I doubled them up.

They will get funky looking, so you might want to find some place outside to store them.  (little Suncast cabinet, etc.)

4x6'.   Pretty good price as well.

I have cooked on mine here in Ohio for 6 winters now and tried most. I had fire bricks in the bottom but now don't use them. I think the welding blankets work about the best but I don't use anything now. I think wind is worse than the cold. Mine is on a covered deck and 3 walls are blocked in the winter so don't get much wind. Don

Without a doubt the welding blanket helps a lot. But with these cold Illinois Winters I find a nice glass of Brandy keeps my temps up above freezing as well!

Awesome! Really appreciate all the advice! Looks like I'm going to get a welding blanket.
