Title: Gourmet SOS, 2015
Post by: ACW3 on August 10, 2015, 09:32:37 PM
We bought a small sour dough boule the other day.  It needs to be baked in the oven.  My wife said, “Do we have any PA dried beef left in the freezer?”  As a matter of fact, we do.  Tonight’s dinner was some of my Gourmet SOS.  I have made this before, but we always seen to not have “reserved servings” for another meal.  I doubled the recipe and made enough so I can have some for breakfast, if I so choose.

In the pot and simmering.  Getting happy.

Sour dough boule with my fiddle bow knife, ready to slice.

Plated, ready to eat!

That was delicious.  Glad I saved some “reserved servings”.

BTW, here is the link to the recipe I used from a previous post.

Man that do look good! Gonna have to try that with some of the dried beef I did a couple weeks ago. You should try making your own DB, it's no harder than Canadian bacon, just takes a while longer but it turns out really good.

Love that SOS, yours looks ten times better than anything I ever saw in the chow hall

I haven't tried making my own dried beef (yet).  I buy the dried beef at Groff's in Elizabethtown, PA whenever I get up there.  The latest batch I bought had a lot less salt than previous batches.  I usually buy them in 1 pound packages and them split them into 8 ounce packages when I get home.  Vacuum sealed and we are good to go.  I can make SOS whenever I like, or my bride requests.

Oh my, do I love this stuff  ;D

Great job, Art!  But, a warning to those who may try to do the recipe with the store-bought dried beef commonly found in little glass jars:  That stuff is only edible if you par boil it first to get the salt out.  If you make SOS with it and don't get the salt out first, you'll be very disappointed  ???

Sorry, I misunderstood.  I bought my dried beef from a PA butcher shop.
