Title: My sisters Buttermilk Pie
Post by: Smokin Don on April 28, 2013, 01:14:39 PM
I first did a buttermilk pie with a recipe from Emeril then my Mother said my Texan sister baked them all the time and gave me her recipe. Emeril's recipe didn't set up well and took longer than the recipe, it did taste good though, very rich. I just baked my sisters recipe and it looks good.

BUTTERMILK PIE
1 1/2 CUPS SUGAR
3 Tbs FLOUR
2 EGGS
1/2 CUP MELTED BUTTER
1 CUP BUTTERMILK
2 TSP VANILLA
1 pie shell homemade or bought
Combine sugar & flour, beat in eggs, add butter, and add buttermilk & vanilla. Pour into pie shell.
Bake @425 for 10 min, 350 for 35 min
I use a Pillsbury pie shell and baked @400 for 10 minutes, 350 for 35 minutes and looked good. Note I don't get fancy with the crust edge; call the a rustic buttermilk pie!

The pie

Interesting. How strong is the buttermilk flavor?

I LOVE a buttermilk pie! Like a lot of ingredients, the buttermilk is not a flavor you can pick out - it just adds this rich creamy texture, like a custard almost.
Fantastic Don! I have already printed this out!

Is this similar to Indiana's "Sugar Cream Pie"?

I've heard of these and for some reason the other day my wife asked me to bake he one.  I guess I will do it...now that I remember her "asking" me to bake her one.  Dee

It is similar to a sugar pie, I think it is a little better but need to taste both at the same time to be sure. I liked this version better than Emeril's. Don

It looks a lot like a twist on a custard pie.  I'd sure give a slice of that a try in a heartbeat!

It was a common pie when/where I grew up.....My Grandmother made it often - as did the local diners.

I really think buttermilk pie has the best flavor and texture.

I made this yesterday for my wife. It was very easy to make and tasted great.  My wife and daughter ate it all.  It's sort of addictive like potato chips when you start eating it.  Dee
