Visited Mother Natures Garden This Morning.
« Reply #-1 on: October 09, 2014, 11:49:02 AM »
Just down the road is a tree farm and they cut a good portion of the mature trees down about ten years ago. Great place to go mushroom hunting/picking. There where a lot of different varieties all over the place but the ones I wanted the deer had munched on the tops. I did manage to find enough for dinner and I want to dehydrate some also.

This is what your looking for. I remember picking these with my mom when I was no more than 10 years old but I hated mushrooms back than but now can't get enough.

Ended up with this small box. Might go back out tomorrow to a different spot.

These are called button mushrooms, in Ukrainian they have a word for them but heck I never learnt how to spell in English let alone in Ukrainian  ;D

Got some for supper tonight and 4 trays like this one going into the dehydrator. Dehydrator is set to 118 F . any hotter and you loose all the good stuff in the mushroom.

I love mushrooms, but unfortunately they love me back in a whole different way!   :D

Don, I admire the fact that you are able to identify and pick safe mushrooms.  I would be too afraid to try it on my own without someone like you schooling me thoroughly on what kinds are safe and which are not.

Looks great Devo,  and some tasty additives down the road with the dried shrooms too!
When I went with my father many moons ago he called that type of mushroom "frosties" as they startd popping up after the first frost. Mighty tasty type of mushroom!

Yup they do start showing around the first frost. Its been real cold at night and they are popping up all over for over a week now. And yes these are about the only ones I feel comfortable picking.

Wow, this is pretty cool. Never dehydrated mushrooms before. Thought they would either change color and get smaller in size but these look just like when they where picked put crisp. All the web sites I visited said they should snap just like potato chips and they do after 18 hours at 118 F degrees. Should be interest to see if they come back to full flavour when added to meals.

I love mushrooms! Those should rehydrate nicely!

As Tent said there are a lot of mushrooms that can make you sick or kill you like the death cap. When I was younger we used to pick wild mushrooms growing in Ojai. My friend and I had a book to help us identify them. But even with the book that had pictures it was still kinda scary thinking about it now although we were really looking for one specific type of mushroom ::)
