Calico beans
« Reply #-1 on: August 24, 2015, 08:12:11 PM »
Got this basic recipe from a High School Band cookbook and modified it a bit, it is delicious:
1 lb ground beef browned with a large chopped onion and 3 cloves of garlic, drained
1 lb bacon, diced, browned and drained
1 lb smoked sausage, cut in bite size pieces
Note: sometimes I may add (or substitute) rib trimmings, canadian bacon, tasso or whatever other meat strikes my fancy.
One can each of dark red kidney beans, light red kidney beans, and baby butter beans, drained
two cans undrained pork and beans (I use Bush's baked beans)
1 c ketchup
1/4 c brown sugar
3 T cider vinegar
1 T liquid smoke
1 t kosher salt
1 t garlic salt
1/4 t black pepper
1/4 t cayenne pepper, (or to your liking)
1 T dry mustard
2 T worcestershire sauce.
combine everything in a large crockpot and heat on low setting for at least 4 hrs.
These are my potluck staple, and if want any for "reserved servings" I take them out beforehand because there's never any left!

Thanks for the post. I've always done mine using the "braille method" - by feel. And, I never remember what I did from time to time (yes, I COULD write it down.) But you've done it for me - bookmarked and printed. Thanks!

I like your recipe TF!!! Here is one I have done for years, similar to yours. I found it in an old local Girl Scout cookbook. Don
