Slawsa German potato salad w/brats
« Reply #-1 on: March 13, 2013, 04:02:12 AM »
Mar 12 2013

I painted doors and woodwork Monday and was tired so we had carry ins from Bob Evans for supper, country fried steak. I knew I could finish up the painting Tuesday so I wanted to cook something quick and easy. I had just bought some Slawsa and was thinking what could I cook and use it. With its sweet & slight sour taste German potato salad was a natural.

My wife’s aunt used to make the best German potato salad, when she made it that’s all I wanted was a plate full of it! I have her recipe but can never get it just like hers.

Tuesday morning I went to my butchers and got 4 of his fresh brats and a pound of his bacon. I also stopped by Sandman’s carry out to replenish my beer supply.

I painted from 11 am to 3:30, well there were a few beer breaks! The grandson was home from school and I relaxed awhile before starting supper.

I got the brats on my smoker at 5:00 and then peeled and sliced the potatoes and made up the potato salad. I heated a can of sliced beets for another side to have.

The wife and I both loved the potato salad; the recipe is a keeper for us.

Recipe:
Slawsa German style potato salad

2 pounds of potatoes
½ pound of bacon, diced
1 onion, thinly sliced
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup Slawsa, original
Celery seed
Salt & pepper to taste

Peel and slice the potatoes, cover with water and ¼ cup apple cider vinegar. Bring to a boil add about a tablespoon of salt. Boil until fork tender.

While the potatoes are cooking brown up the diced bacon, remove and set aside. Pour off all but a tablespoon of the bacon grease and sauté the onions; add some celery seed to the onions. I did the onions just until starting to brown up some.

When the potatoes are done drain in a colander. Add the bacon and onions to the pan then add the potatoes back in. Add the 1 cup of Slawsa; stir to mix well. Add salt & pepper if needed. Serve hot and enjoy.

Diced bacon

Browned bacon

My great grandmother was native German and the regular family cook for weekend meals (as well as the one who taught the rest of us how to prepare German food), so this post is a perfect one for me to read this morning.  "Meema" (one of my uncles couldn't pronounce grandma as a kid) would be proud.  Both my wife and I are of German decent, but sadly we haven't done homemade potato salad (I will not refer to it as "German potato salad" instead referring to the other stuff as picnic potato salad  ;)) in way too long.

Don,
Great looking, and sounding, version of German potato salad.  My family (German and PA Dutch decent) recipe is basically using a homemade wilted salad dressing with the cooked potatoes.  Adding the Slawsa to it sounds great.  I will be trying it, soon.

Those potatoes look so good.  I really want to get some slawsa and try them, but I've had trouble with cabbage before.  Egg rolls and coleslaw are not my friends.  Because of that I'm a bit gun shy in trying cabbage in other forms.

Don are you able to find Slawsa in grocery stores near you now? I still haven't seen it.

I was at Kroger and saw the Slawsa on the shelf, so I picked it up.  I made up a batch of your potatoes tonight, then timidly gave them a try.  Hey they were good and it all stayed down.  That's a first for me and cabbage.  It has been a long time since I was brave enough (or dumb enough) to give it a try again.  Of course, the Slawsa was spread thin through the potatoes.  I guess next test is to put some on a hot dog.  Two thumbs up for the potato salad, and I guess so far a thumbs up for the Slawsa.

I typed that last post right after eating.  Then right after posting it, the back of my  mouth and throat began itching.  That's the same thing that happens when I eat almonds and pears.  My other food allergies.  If that's the worse of it, then I'm ok.  The itching never stops me from eating almonds.

That stinks.  I have a severe anaphylactic allergy to sesame, and it is a pain in the rear.  It can show up in places you would never expect it (especially oil).

That potato salad looks really good. I love it made with bacon in it.
