My favorite homemade rub and sauce
« Reply #-1 on: May 15, 2013, 09:56:16 PM »
When I'm asked for my favorite homemade rub and/or my favorite homemade bbq sauce I give them the following.  I gave each of these out as door prizes at my 50th year high school reunion last Oct down in Savannah.
The rub is called Jan's Rub.  The only thing I know about it is some lady named Jan and her husband developed it and it took over two years of experimenting to do.  It has alot of ingredients but it makes a great rub.  The bbq sauce is called Hubba Bubba and I know nothing about it.  Can't even remember where I got it from  The thing I like about it is you can adjust the spices to make it sweeter or spicier.  I increase the sugar and decrease the heat because I like a sweeter sauce without much heat.

Jan's Rub
1  cup + 4 T sugar
1/4 cup Lawrey's Seasoning Salt
1/4 cup garlic salt
1/4 cup + 1 1/2 tsp celery salt
1/4 cup onion salt
1/2 cup paprika
2 T black pepper
1 T lemon pepper
2 tsp celery seeds
2 tsp ground dry sage
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp dry thyme
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

Mix all in larger bowl and store in cool place away from light in an air tight container or plastic bag.

Hubba Bubba Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup regular Dr Pepper (not diet)
1/4 cup honey
2 T Worcestershire Sauce
1 T soy sauce
1/2 T garlic powder
1/2 T onion powder
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp liquid smoke

Combine all and simmer until smooth...about 5-10 minutes.

Well, there they are.  Try 'em.  I think you'll like 'em. Dee

Ahhhh yes, Jan's rub is great. I even sprinkle it on my popcorn :)
KyNola, a member here; his wife (Jan) put all the ingredients together trying to clone a rub.
There is more to the story but I don't want to make anything up.

Yes Sir!  That Jan's rub is my go to rub for everything.  Great on Brisket, Butt and chicken.  Never tried it on my Corn Flakes but I bet it would be good  ;D

The Hubba Bubba sauce came from a poster named rdwilliamson on the Char Broil forum a few years ago.

Well they deserve a Blue Ribbon and hug around the neck for their contributions.  I'll hug Jan.  Turtle, you can hug KyNola. ;)  Dee

Dee introduced me to Hubba Bubba Sauce at the Gathering in Augusta.  I declared then that it was the best sauce I have ever tasted.  I haven't changed my opinion of the sauce, but I can't say the same for Uncle Dee.*  Deb's favorite was the Carolina Classic at Sticky Fingers, but she wants only H B now.

Pork rubs we like include TMB's Classic from Toney, AL, FS&B from NC, and Franklin's from Austin.

Chicken rubs include Chicken Savor and that's about it.  Deb has me locked in to that one.

Keep in mind, I haven't had the exposure that most of y'all have had so my tastes may vary by content.  All rubs are packed by weight, not by volume.

With all the ravings about Jan's, I MAY give it a try pretty soon.  I would hate to retire from cooking and then find out how good Jan's could have been.

*b t w, my opinion of Dee has gone higher and higher each time we spend time together.

I happen to be the one who talked RD into giving out his Hubbard Bubba recipe. Originally he had given it to me through a PM with strict instructions not to share it. It was his recipe that he bottles and sells. And so I did not share it with anyone. After I made some for myself and tasted it I told him how great I thought it was. I also told him that the people of this forum(SOTG) would appreciate his sauce if he offered it for sale to forum members. I guess he felt guilty and shared the recipe with everybody after that.

I really don't like Dr.Pepper but love that BBQ sauce ;)

Interesting recipes. I just did two screen shots with plans to try both.

Thank you,
