My Small Garden
« Reply #-1 on: May 17, 2013, 02:02:24 AM »
I finally got my small garden in today, a raised bed 4X8 feet by 10 inches. I have some Kentucky Wonder pole beans along the fence, 5 tomato plants and pickler cucumbers planted among the tomatoes. I am hoping the cukes will help keep down the weeds and give me some cukes to make dill pickles.

Here are some chives blooming and I just planted some fern leaf dill in the square tile. When the chives flowers die I will cut them down and they will bloom one more time. I have the same on the other corner of the shed with sweet basil in the square tile.

After only a little over two weeks my garden is doing fine. Green beans are along the fence, planted from seeds. In the front left corner is a cucumber plant and to it's right is some cukes started from seeds so should have two crops a few weeks apart to make dill pickles. My tomato plants are blooming. When I set my plants I use miracle grow about half strength to water. Since then just water, we have had some nice rains. I had added some lime to the soil earlier. The rest of the growing season if I need to water will use miracle grow a few times. Don

Well my pole beans looked like a bumper crop but just got one mess off of them. My cukes didn't fare much better just got enough for a quart of dill pickles. I tore both out since they were choking my tomato plants. I have had nice tomatoes but cooler weather came in and they slowed down. I just got these yesterday. Next year I am just doing tomatoes and maybe some early lettuce. Don

Lookin' good, Smokin Don; we were able to pick some of out tomatoes yesterday, and made a salad of cubed zucchini and tomato, feta cheese, and a dressing made from olive oil, red wine vinegar, spicy brown mustard, salt, pepper.  Wrapped in romaine lettuce leaves, it made a cool and healthy dinner.  ;)
