New Start for me!!
« Reply #-1 on: August 01, 2013, 09:57:27 PM »
Haven't logged on the forum as frequent as I usually do. I recently quit my job a AT&T that i was at for 13 years for a position at DOW Chemical as a chemical process operator. Cell phones have been the  demise of telephone repairman. No home phone lines to repair equals laying techs off due to not enough work; and in an union job, the lay offs come by seniority and not by how good you are or how hard you work. A few years ago I had over 300 techs below me and this year it was down to 99 and they were planning to let another 76 go.  I figured id get out while I still could and start another career.
I've been training for 8 weeks now and have till sept 25th to go. When I get to the plant, I'm looking at another year of training to run the Chlorine plant I've been assigned to.
Today I logged in to 71 new threads to go thru :). Keep up the good work out there so I have something to take my mind off when I get a break from all the studying I'm doing.
By the way, I'm typing and doing this off my smartphone ;D

Good Luck from me also Mike.

I'm not sure if you folks know the name in Idaho (Simplot) but I used to work at their plant in Canada. Anyway process operating was how I got my start in life.

I applaud your thinking and having the guts to be pro-active Mike. Many folks nowadays would wait for the axe to fall - then collect un-employment for as long as they could. You obviously have a great work ethic.
Wish I could shake your hand. Best of luck on the new career!

Wonderful move!  I know that it is a difficult thing to do.  I did something similar many years ago.  I went from  a relatively high paying sales manager's job to going back to school to get my master's degree and become a high school math teacher.  My pay dropped significantly, but it was fun to go back to work again.  I received a lot of satisfaction as a teacher and coach that I never really had as a salesman and sales manager.

Hang in there brother!  It can only get better!!

I greatly admire and applaud your flexibility and forward thinking.  A collegue of mine used to ask me, "Have you re-invented yourself today?"  He made a good point.  I got to re-invent myself a few times over the years, sometimes not really wanting to do it, but knowing it was best in the long run.  Hang in there.  Best wishes for the new job  ;D
