OMG, you brought back good old memories! In Germany, these are called apfelpfannkuchen (apple pancakes), and my mother also made pflaumenpfannkuchen (plum pancakes). However, hers were really simple - a thin batter with the fruit added - sliced apples in apfelpfannkuchen and halved plums cut side up) in pflaumenpfannkuchen. Although these were not special occasion breakfasts, we typically had them when fresh in-season fruit was available.
