Got to judge BACON!
« Reply #-1 on: November 02, 2013, 05:55:17 PM »
At this year's Hog Happnin' in Shelby, NC they added a category (and a sponsor) and we judged BACON for the final category!  We got four entries at our table.  First was a bacon rosette around a slice of smoked sausage with a candied pecan on the top then all glazed with maple syrup -- fantastic and it carried our table.  Second was bacon wrapped meatloaf -- it was a little dry but, what the heck, it had lots of bacon!  Third was a big shrimp, battered, then wrapped with bacon, coated in panko crumbs and deep fried with a sprinkle of something zingy at the end -- it was my second favorite.  Fourth was a kind of pot roast and potatoes with some bacon in it -- okay, but I could barely find the bacon.

This is a big contest for kid's charities in the area and I know the sponsorship meant a lot to the organizers.  I'll buy some Wright's bacon on my next grocery run to show them how much I appreciate the gesture and the help.  Editorial:  Let's have more BACON categories  8)

Sorry we missed judging this year.  Maybe next year.  Bacon, huh!  All I have ever gotten are some really lame sauces to judge.

Sounds like that was the table to be judging!

I've been to Shelby, NC a number of times. I have a good friend who was born & raised there.

The Shelby contest is one of the best in the region -- fantastic organizers and a good venue.  Also, it draws top teams late in the season when some are still chasing points and all are in good "tune" with their food.  Food quality is usually top notch.  On a sadder note, it is often my last contest of the season (there are a few more in November and December but not many and they are long drives for me.)

I read in Consumer's Report that they rated Costco's bacon as the best choice followed by Wright's which is what I normally buy.  Have not bought Costco's (store brand is Kirkland) yet but will sometime soon and try it.
