I'm ready!! Now where the heck is Spring??
« Reply #-1 on: January 30, 2014, 12:03:35 PM »
Getting a little antsy for getting my garden going this year!  Going to have to figure out how to chicken-proof things this year to avoid the little buggers decimating it all again, though.  :)

I've also (almost) got James on board for doing a smaller version of THIS in the kitchen.  Fresh herbs at your fingertips!  How cool!

I really like the kitchen herb garden.. chicken wire works best for critters, unless you have big critters.  Is he gonna  make them from pallets?  Pam    .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

Pam-- We're still tossing around ideas, have found LOTS of different set ups online, so will see what we can come up with.

Found this picture of someone reusing a pallet-- what a clever use!

Also like the sleek look of these ones:

And CDN, that one does look like they're in little pots on a slant.  Have seen some pretty wild arrangements that seem like they'd be super messy when you try and water them.

I think we'll go for something that doesn't dump dirt all over the floors.  :)

If I had the time and space, etc I might look at something like this.

What a cool idea!  Unless you have cats-- eating house plants AND swatting at the fish would just be too big of a temptation!  :)

My James is looking at doing something along those lines on a grander scale on our farm-- having a fish/duck pond with a solar pump to pump water up to the garden area.   Probably a few years out, but he's scheming!  :)

He works for the Dept. of Transportation, and he's done a lot with bio-swells, where they plant specific grasses and plants to filter out a lot of the heavy metals and icky stuff that washes off the roads so the ground water doesn't get as polluted.  He's thinking of doing something similar at our place as well, so the road runoff that runs through our field can get filtered first before hitting the pond.

Not a bad idea!! :)   They are sure delicious!

The troublemaker ones are my good layers, though, so I can't make dinner out of them all!  :)  I think Pam's got a good thing with the chicken wire.   They are just such clever little sneaks, we'll still have to watch them.

Cool ideas for the kitchen garden.  Kerry's been after me to do a pallet garden but I think I'm going for a raised bed of some sort. I may use pallet wood to build it...
I use the deer net to keep my chickens off  plants. They don't like the way it gets caught in the feet. Other cridders don't either.  I fixed it around the chicken pen so if a fox goes over the top he ends up in a loop of the net. This gives me time to get on out there and blast his a$$.  The however the coons are smarter and don't get caught in it. Had to install motion detectors for them.
I think your herb ideas out by my grill area would be super cool... I may just have to follow your lead there.
Nice pics too...

This is all I have so far for growing herbs in the kitchen...  You can just take the root ends that you cut off from the green onions you buy, plant them, and like magic, they grow all new green onions!    You can snip off the green, and they'll just keep on producing more.   Very hardy little plants, and it's a great way to use the root that I used to just toss out!

Obviously have a long way to go before I reach my herb growing goals. :)  But working on it!  Have some seeds started now.

For the chickens I was going to suggest a nice spice rub and 250F until an IT of 165F. but....

we're still waiting for winter to show up here, I'm not ready for summer. We do not have spring in Florida.
