We had a pretty good day for our first backyard comp of the year. Cooking with an old friend that has been bitten by the bug, Lord help him.   ;)

This unsanctioned backyard comp used 95% KCBS certified judges & went by KCBS standards. The organizers used local "celebrity" judges, who were mostly local elected officials, but we didn't know who they were. This might explain our one crazy chicken score we received! This comp was only for ribs & chicken, as are most BY comps, although I have competed in some BY events that you had to cook all four

We learned a lot and I think we can do well this year. We plan on practicing another cook in a week and we may end up competing on my friends Lang 60" Deluxe instead of a Traeger & a Rec Tec. Nice to have options to choose from.

I overcooked my chicken because I was worried about my ribs getting done on time. I didn't follow my chicken time line to the letter, and that cost me with somewhat dry chicken. Lesson learned.

Here are pics of our turn in boxes and our awards. Not a bad start to the season, as we finished fourth overall out of 24 teams. I still want to do better and I know we can. And we will!

Rib box. Note to self - don't try to cram the box so full.

Chicken box.

Hardware... Sort of. They only gave out trophies for First Place in categories & GC.

Beautiful cut on those ribs, and I like the way the box looks.  If I want to see green, I will look at my lawn.  :D

You know, the more I look at those ribs the more I think you need to come down to the house and practice.

Just not sure until I taste them if doing them right !   ;) ;) ;) ;)

I would give both boxes a "9"...good job.  BTW how do you like the Rec Tec?  I am thinking pellet smoker and so far it is in the #1 position.  Are you happy with the stock controller?

On Amazon it has 103 reviews, 100 x 5-stars, 3 x 4-stars and 1 x 2 stars..It must be doing something right

One word: L-O-V-E!!!!

A little background...

Last year, I competed with a different team than this year. One of those guys had a Rec Tec and we used it mostly for big meats (Butts & brisket) when we had to cook them for a couple of comps. I was amazed how the Rec Tec held steady temps in every weather condition we threw at it, from 20's & windy, to 40's and rainy, up to 80°+. Nothing ever fazed it. It's like the guys who founded Rec Tec took a Traeger and improved a few things, and then gave it a little attitude.

Rec Tec was an easy choice since I was already familiar with it. After 6-7 cooks in the three weeks I've owned it, it has been flawless. As far as the stock controller goes, it is a PID unit that is made by Roanoke Electronic Controls, and is basically the same unit that is used in much more expensive Memphis pellet grills. In monitoring the actual vs. set temps, I don't think I've seen 10° difference no matter what I cook on it.

I look forward to many more cooks on my Rec Tec.
