I'm starting out and this meat Thermometer had pretty good reviews, my question is I read somewhere here that I need to wrap my wires in aluminum foil I think or it would last long or something like that. I'm I good to go or do I need to wrap my wires?

First, I split this post from the other thread so it gets the proper attention.
I haven't wrapped any of the cables on my grill thermometers. I'm not sure that wrapping them would really add any benefit. For a while MAK grills sold a "MAK Armored Probe" which was wrapped in a steel sheath for added protection. Turns out they had the same failure rate as the non-armored probes.

I have been using Maverick probe type therms for several years. I have never wrapped the probes. Only have had 1 probe fail & that was when my wife, not knowing better, put one in the sink while washing dishes.

I think it was Muebe who put me on to heat shrinking a tube on where the cable meets the probe. Water is not a friend of these probes

Heck I am to busy or maybe just to lazy becasue to solve the problem I just buy a set of spare cables when I buy the unit.
So here is how well this works.
I have a door full of cables where the unit went bad first.

The only time I have wrapped my cables in foil is when I use the TBE. That gets pretty hot and it was suggested. Well worth being cautious vs having to buy the new cables.
That said, I watch out for deals. I was at a competition where, if I bought something from Maverick, I got a cheaper digital thermometer free. It came with 2 of the cables. I could care less about the back up thermometer but the cables on hand - yep!

Thanks for all the answers to my question, this thermometer should arrive today and I'll be trying it out tomorrow in my Big Easy, I'm doing a beer can chicken and with possibly a couple of turkey legs. I'll check into the maverick thermometer the next time if this doesn't last

Check to be sure the cables/probes are interchangeable. I have two different Maverick Wireless thermometers (ET-732 & BB-22) and the probes, unfortunately, are not interchangeable.

Oh, I did. The rep was there at the open house for Maverick. I got their blow torch attachment and got the temperature gauge for free !
I am a sucker for a deal!
