I will post pictures of how I did mine on the Akorn tomorrow. If you are near a lumberyard, go get a couple of feet of the thin metal bands that they use around bundles of wood. They are usually on the ground or in the rubbish bin. It will take about 10 minutes to install.

Installed & tried the TipTopTemp on my Akorn.
N. Ontario Smoker has done a review, but couldn't find.
TipTopTemp was $20 delivered from yard and pool .
Decided to mount with a plate holder $3-4 .
Allows for easy removal for high heat & cleaning.
Installing takes 1 minute!
Well does it work? Oh yes.
Lite a fire & let burn for 15 minutes, then set bottom vent on setting of 1/2. Dial set at 3 .
The temp varied from 240-260 for 4 hours.
Opened up bottom vent all the way then slowly worked up to dial setting 9 ran up to 550F before shutting down.
With the picture hanger you can still close the factory top vent to shut down & preserve charcoal.

TipTopTemp fits over factory vent

This is looking more and more like the most obvious thing to add to almost any normally aspirated charcoal cooker ! !

Ok, watched a video that showed the user taking off the Akorn top vent and the tip,top fitting snugly into the opening, anyone tried this? I purchased one for the Akorn in Florida but who knows when I'll get there, maybe X mas?

I think you would have a hard time shutting down the Akorn after the cook. The Tip Top would probably want to keep opening to raise the temperature.

Really? Never heard of them but yardandpool.com (http://www.yardandpool.com/maverick-tip-top-temp-grill-temperature-regulator) has them for $19.99 (including shipping if you're not in Hawaii).

Terry brought a T T T to the Cookout with Bremer and we used it on the Weber whilst we cooked some ribs.  We used the "fuse" method with the charcoal and set the bottom vent half open.
All of us we amazed that once we dialed it in, the grill held 250 for about 4 hours.
The T T T is hereby certified by Backyard Jack's BBQ in Byron.  Buy with confidence...

just sayin'...

Think it might work on my little Weber Smokey Joe??

PS.  Was talking to my brother and he reminded me that in the cabin in the late forties and fifties we had a damper on a wood stove with adjustable sping system like the Tiptop

I see no reason why it won't work on the S J...
