Need advice which pellet to purchase
« Reply #-1 on: February 03, 2016, 09:11:12 PM »
Okay,  never cooked on a pellet grill, I'm ready to dive in, don't want to go crazy price wise which is easy to do on a pellet grill.  If I had a unlimited budget #1 MAK 2 star general, #2 Rec Tech, #3 Camp Chef pg24. Went to Gander Mountain today to look and feel, glad I did the Camp Chef on the floor that i think was the pg24 (smokestack in the back and clean out tool on the side) seemed really cheap I could flex the hood to the right and left with one hand almost a inch, not worth $588.00 plus tax.  Any suggestions?  Don't want to spend big time but in the $500.00 range... Thanks for all of your help.  ;)

Concur with Sparky. GMG makes a great product for their price range. I carry their Davy Crockett in my RV - wonderful product for home and on the road. Perfect for 2 people and/or a small family.

I recently saw one of the newer models on display and was very underwhelmed. But then again I am used to the quality in my MAK 1 star.

I know of two people who, very recently have had MAJOR quality issues with the newer models of the Camp Chef pellet grills.  Their complaints were very similar: overall, just cheaply built, lots of smoke leaking from the lid, major temp swings, trouble getting the grill to reach temps above 350°, and one was having intermittent flame-out issues requiring him to turn the grill off and back on during a cook to get it to work.  After working with tech support, and replacing the controller, he finally gave up and returned the grill, very dissatisfied.

Sorry, but I would stay away from these.

For the budget you're looking at:

>  I have not seen one in action, but knowing Rec-Tec's quality, and seeing their other grills in action, I would at least look at the Rec-Tec Jr.

>  I have seen Old Dave's GMG Davy Crockett portable grill in action a couple times, and think they're a great little grill.  Very portable.

>  Another option, which I have personally seen in action is the Treager Jr, upgraded with a Ortech Controller.  Mike (HighOnSmoke) brought his to the gathering a couple years in a row, and I have to admit I was quite impressed with it's performance. It was one smoking little pellet grill.

Here's a link to a post he made about it: http://www.letstalkbbq.com/index.php?topic=6043.msg76224#msg76224

Wow! I think your advice is dead on ! The "smoke " likes the camp chef but the ss model, I don't disagree has a lot of features that most don't have including the rec tech mini.   Still not sure which way to go although rec tech mini is in the lead, better built and I like the portability.
Thanks again for the input
