Went to Gander Mountain today to look and feel, glad I did the Camp Chef on the floor that i think was the pg24 (smokestack in the back and clean out tool on the side) seemed really cheap I could flex the hood to the right and left with one hand almost a inch, not worth $588.00 plus tax.
I recently saw one of the newer models on display and was very underwhelmed. But then again I am used to the quality in my MAK 1 star.
I know of two people who, very recently have had MAJOR quality issues with the newer models of the Camp Chef pellet grills. Their complaints were very similar: overall, just cheaply built, lots of smoke leaking from the lid, major temp swings, trouble getting the grill to reach temps above 350°, and one was having intermittent flame-out issues requiring him to turn the grill off and back on during a cook to get it to work. After working with tech support, and replacing the controller, he finally gave up and returned the grill, very dissatisfied.
Sorry, but I would stay away from these.
For the budget you're looking at:
> I have not seen one in action, but knowing Rec-Tec's quality, and seeing their other grills in action, I would at least look at the Rec-Tec Jr.
> I have seen Old Dave's GMG Davy Crockett portable grill in action a couple times, and think they're a great little grill. Very portable.
> Another option, which I have personally seen in action is the Treager Jr, upgraded with a Ortech Controller. Mike (HighOnSmoke) brought his to the gathering a couple years in a row, and I have to admit I was quite impressed with it's performance. It was one smoking little pellet grill.
Here's a link to a post he made about it:
